Vanilla’s Training Log 6-1-14

I didn’t hit my goal running mileage for the week, and I also discovered that I’m still struggling with anything under 7:30 pace.  Tried liquid iron for the first time (based on a recommendation from a friend).  I’m hopeful!

Sunday:  Weights, followed by 3,000m swim.  Longest swim since Ironman.  I was super hungry throughout the day!

Monday:  BolderBoulder!  Had plans to run 43-44 minutes based on some recent training runs, but I just didn’t feel great after 2 miles.  Went out in about 7:00 pace, but started feeling dizzy and short of breath after the first hill.  Had to slow down and just surged when I could.  Ran about a minute slower than last year, and I felt worse.  47:25.  Hopefully, I can figure out this iron issue–I’ve been seeking out advice from some elite runners in the area, so hopefully things will turn around.  Anything under 7:30 just doesn’t feel right to me.  The pro race started just after 11, so after our race, we went home to change, grab our bikes and follow the race around Boulder.  It’s fun watching the pro race at so many different points on the course.

Tuesday:  Easy 3.6 miles in 28:53–7:50s feel fine for me, so miles 2-3 were 7:58/7:53.  Easy bike ride in the evening of almost 21 miles.

Wednesday:  4.55 miles attempting some 7:00 surges, but I just couldn’t do it.  Was able to get to 7:30 without feeling dizzy or depleted.  No rain, no wind and 88 degrees made for a great 24 miler in the evening.

Thursday:  Met up with my friend Cathy on the trails for an early morning 3 mile walk.  She is battling an injury and can’t run, so we decided to walk and her dog went with us running around the open space.  I did get in 7 miles later in the day.

Friday:  Weights + 4.5 mile run.  First day of using Liquid Iron, and it’s nasty.  I had to drink it like a shot with a chaser.  I have been told its good stuff and will help tremendously, so I’m willing to give it a chance.  1,500 swim in the evening.

Saturday:  40 mile ride followed by a 4 mile run.  20 mile time trial on the bike at 20 mph!  I was pretty excited by this since 2 weeks ago, I averaged 19.8.  Legs felt surprisingly fresh off the bike and sub 8:00 pace felt comfortable?  Did some stretching/core and weights later in the day.

Weekly Totals:

Running: 32 miles

Swimming:  2.8 miles

Biking:  103 miles

Weights:  > 2 hours
