Salty’s Training Log – 9.18 & 9.25.16

Well, you win some and you lose some. The week preceding 9.18.16 was capped off by my first race in a year and my best race in longer. The time was not historically something for me to freak out about – two minutes slower than my PR – but, in the grand scheme of the last couple of years I was super happy with it. And all week after, I was on cloud nine … despite feeling a little beat up after a 5k.

I don’t know why I thought I could get away with this, but despite knowing better I have difficulty not setting my expectations about my running based on my old in-shape and younger self. Not racing for a year and then racing twice in 6 days? Not advisable. Maybe I thought it would be ok because running a strange distance as part of a marathon relay race just isn’t the same as lining up for a 5k, but in the middle of it, well at the beginning of it, I kinda got sucked into it. Part of that was because I found myself surrounded by a great group of women all running the half and full marathon. Strangely, I didn’t feel mortified by this – it was so fun! But by mile 4 of my 5.8 mile leg, despite being pretty conversational, I just felt like if I didn’t back off, I was going to hurt way more after this than I was willing to hurt. The last thing I need is another setback. So while I think I have the fitness to race close to a 42:00 10k right now, that’s assuming I’m recovered going into it and, perhaps, with a little more training under my belt. I ended up running an average of 6:58 pace, which was about 6:48 (?) average to mile 4 (first 5k was 21:0x, but otherwise I didn’t notate splits) and then … not so great.

But I’ll get there. Just have to stay consistent and incorporate a little training, first!

Preschool means more trails!

  1. Maybe physically running 2 races after a year off racing wasn’t the best, but I think mentally it could have been really good for you. Reminder of the fun in racing, being around the other runners- and yes sometimes also a reality check that we can’t always do everything we think we can (I know I can’t be the only one who admits to needing those checks occasionally!).

  2. Any kind of relay sounds so much easier than it actually is, I think! And I think with racing, at least shorter distances, you have to kind of throw yourself in and flounder around until you remember what you’re doing … and how it hurts after!
