Salty’s Training Log – 9.11.16

Another busy week in the books! But I managed to squeeze in 40 miles of running anyway and, dare I say it, I’m feeling good! I have a 5k in a week. I know it’s going to be a major rust-buster and it helps that I have another race the following weekend and possibly a few other shorties before the end of the year. We shall see!

The highlight of my running week came on Monday when I met the North team for their hill workout. They did 3 x 3 sets up a big hill with varying grades ranging from steep to WTF. Since I’ve done no recent hill training other than running up them sometimes, I only did 2 sets of 3, but I worked. I did the first set with Sydnie and the second set with Ashleigh. Both are incredibly focused and hard working and they did not phone this one in one bit. I was very impressed! And very sore in the glutes the next day. I’m really glad I didn’t let my ego trump my good sense and cut it short. I ran about twenty minutes before meeting the team and got in a solid 8 miles that morning to kick off a decent week all things considered.

Tomorrow, my youngest starts preschool and we’ll finally get back on a schedule, so I’m hoping I can keep up some consistent decent mileage and some workouts too!

I negligently took no photos related to my own running this week, but my husband found this as he prepped for his race last night. Did he take it? What do you think?

Mon: 8 miles with 2 x 3 Hills. Jog down + core rest between reps and then an additional loop of jogging between sets.

Tue: off

Wed: 7 miles easy. Sore! But felt better by the end and I’m sure it would have helped to run on Tuesday, but just didn’t make it out.

Thu: Stupid day. Had a bunch of extra stuff on my list that I had to do, so barely had time. When I could finally get out it was pouring and my daughter refused to nap, so I took her out in the stroller and it was so fun … for a mile and then she was done. Went back inside and by the time I dried her off and got on the mill I only had time for 2 more. Bla.

Fri: 10! I needed this. It felt so good to get this in before another busy crazy weekend. So glad I sucked it up and did it. I always feel guilty leaving my daughter at childwatch for more than an hour, but it wasn’t that much more than an hour and I packed out lunch so we enjoyed that after together. It was such a nice relaxing morning! Thank you, Y!!!

Sat: 7 in the evening crammed in after a long day of soccer and xc! Got caught in a downpour the last mile and lightning! Made it inside safe! Turned down an offer for a ride from a guy in a truck. Yep, rather get struck by lightening than sit half-naked in a strange man’s truck. Call me crazy.

Sun: Husband’s annual half marathon. I wanted to go run it with him, but no sitters, so the kids and I surprised him and cheered at the end and my son ran the last 400 in with him. Aww! So sweet!!! Then 5 in the evening with 6 x :30 strides that felt delicious! I have no idea what my pace was (probably 7:00!) but they felt fast and smooth. Yeah!

Total: 40

Salty Running boss and mother of 3 little ones with PRs of 3:10:15 (26.2), 1:25:59 (13.1) and 18:15 (5k). I love to write about running culture, mental training, and fitting in a serious running habit with the rest of a busy life.

    1. It’s so silly. If someone does judge us and think we’re selfish, who really cares? (It’s easier to say that than to actually not care, though!)

    1. I feel like that’s the story of every week in my life lately. I guess it’s time to accept it and quit feeling like’s it’s notable because this point it’s my normal!

      1. you’re right! i was just reading back through my own training log from this time last year when I had just got back to work for the first time with two kids after my 2nd mat leave, and all the juggling I had to do made my head spin. then I realized that I’m dealing with the same things now and it doesn’t faze me as much! (phase me? why do I not know that one)
