Salty’s Training Log – 8.17.14 & 8.24.14

It’s been 4 weeks now since I started liquid iron and 2 since I started vitamin D supplements. I am noticing an improvement in my energy levels, mood and in the feel of my runs. I’m starting to get excited!

Two weeks ago, the big kids were in camp together in the mornings all week, so I ran a lot of miles in the daylight pushing the baby in the single stroller. It was a nice foreshadowing of the fall and beyond when both of the big kids will be in school 4 days a week and it will be just me and baby most days. Looking forward to it!

After that, we went on a little vacation from Sunday to Friday of last week to Kelleys Island. With packing, prep and travel I couldn’t manage to find the time for a long run on the weekend. But I made up for it a little by hitting 50 miles in just 5 days of running the next week. My first 50 mile week since the beginning of July! I really enjoyed running on Kelley’s Island. There are about 11-12 miles of very low-traffic (at least during midweek) paved roads that are either on the lakefront, shaded or otherwise picturesque. I felt very safe and ran all over the place alone, but also got in a couple of runs with my husband while my mom watched the kids. I also had a chance to get in come cycling which I almost never do because a) I don’t own a bike and b) I’m petrified of getting hit or in an accident on the roads. But there I felt great and enjoyed biking all the roads with my husband one afternoon.

And sadly (well, sad only if you’re his mom and it’s only sad in the my-baby-is-growing-up-too-fast-sense), I got to ride 2-wheel bikes with my 5 year old who learned to ride a 2-wheeler in our driveway before our trip and during the trip rode the roads like a pro. I even ran with him for 1.5 miles while he rode one morning! It was great!

Anyway, I know I’m feeling a lot better because I slept horribly all week (I am a sensitive sleeper and rarely sleep well out of my own bed), yet I managed to make it through most days without a nap, losing my temper or generally feeling terrible. I didn’t wear my gps on vacation, so I had no idea what paces I was running, but my suspicions were confirmed when I got home and felt way better than I have on my long run nailing 7:27 pace on a hilly-ish route (lightly rolling with one monster mile long hill). I’m not sure if I can get to the track this week, but I’d like to see how it feels. The track seems to be where I really feel the effects of the low iron/vitamin D.

Week ending 8/17/14

Mon: 7 easy with the single stroller, no watch.

Tue: 8 miles with track workout.ย Workout was 1600, 4 x 400, 1600, 4×400. I ran 6:08, 84, 86 (did every other 400. Body wasstill slow at clearing lactic). Then a 1200 in 4:39 and then 400 in 87 and then 80.

Wed: 6 miles with the stroller and no watch.

Thu: 7 miles with the stroller and no watch including 5 x :20 strides which were a hoot with the baby. I found a clear area of path where I had a view of anyone coming or going. I let her out of the stroller and jogged backwards away from her and then as she ran towards me I went speeding towards her and past and she thought it was a riot and tried to get me! So fun!

Fri: 8 miles with the stroller and no watch. The novelty wore off and I half wish I woke up early and got in a tempo or something.

Sat: Husband and I were planning to do a long run, but had a meeting that went longer than planned so we only managed to get in 6.25 around the land we bought almost a year ago! (Big changes coming to Saltyland!)

Sun: off. Between packing and laundry and travel, just didn’t happen.

Total: 42.25

Week ending 8/24/14

Mon: 11 miles easy with no watch on Kelleys Island. Felt pretty terrible. Had vacation legs from bad sleep, not enough water and sitting in a car for too long the day before. Went on a 12 mile bike ride with my husband after!

Tue: Off. We did a day trip to another island and I spent the rest of my free time sitting at a tiki bar with my husband!

Wed: 8.5 with 8 x 2:00/1:00 (except 2:30 rest after #5). Felt good! No idea on pace though, so taking it with a grain of salt. Thought about 10, but my legs were feeling it by 8 and so I figured it was time to call it. About 90 minutes later I did 1.5 pushing the baby in the stroller while my son rode his bike.

Thu: 8 with my husband around the southern half of the island. Easy and fun. We raced each other the last .25 because why not?!

Fri: Travel day. We had to be out of the rental by 10:00 a.m. and we got home around 3:00 and besides being pooped, the kids were hooligans so it just wasn’t going to happen. I did some decent strength training in my basement though!

Sat: 7 bright and early before heading to our first farmers market of the year. Felt great and had no problem getting out the door around 6:15.

Sun: 14 with Kelsi. I felt just meh through about 9 miles, but once we made it up the monster mile long hill I felt really good for a few miles and was able to get the pace down in the low-7:00s for most of the rest of the run. So nice to run with Kelsi. I feel like I haven’t run with any of my friends for eons!

Total: 50 miles running and 12 miles on the bike!
