Salty’s Training Log – 7.6.14


I’m always a little tired. I mean, I have three kids under 6, so of course I’m a little tired. I’ve been meaning to get blood work done to see make sure my iron, thyroid, vitamin D, etc are all good since my 3 pregnancies and epic nursing spells, which I finally did on Thursday. No results yet.

But this week, beyond the normal, I was epically tired. ย I had a midweek bout of insomnia that twisted that tired knife and by the weekend I was a wreck. I often have a hard time falling asleep after evening track workouts on Tuesday, but this past Tuesday I did not fall asleep until 1:30 and I had a 5:30 wake up on tap for my Wednesday run. I was able to catch an hour nap that day, but the ย on Wednesday night I had a similar issue and could not fall asleep and again had an early morning wake-up to get my run in. Luckily, Thursday’s run was just 5 miles so I caught a few extra z’s, but not enough!

I’m working on trying to get to bed earlier, but the kids have not been very cooperative. The baby in particular decided that now is a good time go through a sleep regression. She’s 19 months and unless she’s going through a little regression or teething she goes to sleep no problem, but for the last 5 days or so she cries for 45 minutes + until my husband or I cave and go in and rub her back until she falls asleep. Now it’s migrated to nap time too. Today it took her an hour of crying to get to sleep and then she only slept 45 minutes. Eek! Not helping, kid!

Anyway, the big news (I guess) is that I raced on Friday. I ran a 5 mile race with my teammates and had a ton of fun! 4 our of 6 of us PR’d, which was amazing. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. I was a good 80 seconds off my best. I ran 32:30 (6:28 pace). I was hoping to be under 32:00 and thought that was a very realistic goal, but the best I could do on Friday was the 32:20 and that was with being pushed by my teammate for the last mile, which we ran in ~6:15 (wore my cheap watch so splits are fuzzy). I think what I did was run ~6:20 then 6:3x’s and then ~6:15. And that first mile was probably something like 800 in 3:00 and then another 800 in 3:20.

Sure, it wasn’t an amazing race. But it was my first short race of the year and my first race of any distance since April when I ran a 10 miler in 1:07:47. I am not race-ready yet, mentally or physically. And that’s ok. I’ll get there. I just have to put myself out there and relearn it all. I know it takes a little time to get mentally and physically sharp to be able to nail it and barring some miracle, it was not going to happen in this first race.

We won the team competition outright, even beating all the mixed and mens teams!

That being said, my favorite local race is this coming Sunday, another 5 miler. Can’t say I’m stoked to hit that up after Friday’s race, but I’m trying to be open-minded. I am trying not to worry about the time. My goal is to race better this weekend. I may or may not run a faster time, but I want to be more focused and to push myself harder in the middle. Maybe if I keep telling myself that I won’t get hung up on the end result!

Mon: 8 early and easy with no watch.

Tue: 10 with track. Fun workout! 2 x 200 (200 jog), 800 (400 jog), 4 x 400 (400 jog between reps and 800 jog between sets), 800, 2 x 200. I ran 36 (fastest yet!), 37, 2:54, 82, 80, 81, 81, 2:54, 37, 37.

Wed: 7 early and less easy with KN.

Thu: 5 early and easy with no watch. TIRED!

Fri: 12 with 5 mile race in 32:20. Was supposed to do a workout after the race with the team. After a short rest, we ran 2 miles < 7:00 pace and then were supposed to do 10 x 1:00 on/2:00 off. I started the fartlek and my hip was not having it so I shuffled back to the finish by myself.

Sat: 6 on the trails. Slept in a little, so ran in the afternoon. Hip was really tight starting out, but got better as I went. That’s the goodish news. The baddish news is that I didn’t see a huge root lurking in the shadows and I ended up sliding across the trail on my arm and hip bone. I’m fine, just annoyingly scraped and brusied.

Sun: 15 at 7:38 pace. Ran with KN again and we had another epic long run adventure. Did 6 miles on trails averaging 7:54 and then 9 on roads averaging 7:26. Got a sloshy belly (too much water too fast?) stitch with 2.5 to go and was ok until we were at 14.65 and started hyperventilating. So annoying. Stopped and caught my breath and finished it out.

Total: 63 miles
