Salty + Patreon = More Salty

Hopefully you have noticed that we’re back to posting stuff about running. YUSSSS!!! Chicory posted an awesome race report, today we had an update from Sesame, and there are more updates to come, as well as some other ideas bubbling around among those of us who are returning. We’ve also put out an open call for some new bloggers (you can apply here) I gotta say, it feels pretty awesome that we’re back to basics!

Now that we’ve got our legs under us, it’s time to consider how to keep this boat afloat. This here little enterprise takes a lot of time and resources, and while we have been able to survive thus far with our own funds plus contributions from friends and family, the time has come to ask our fans to help.

That’s why I’ve launched a Patreon campaign, which you can find at https://www.patreon.com/saltyrunning. That means you’ll be seeing this at the end of posts:

Because we know you guys believe in our mission to create space in the world for runners to become the best versions of themselves, we are inviting you to join our team of advisors on a pay-what-you-can basis, for as little as $1 a month.

Not only will you be supporting the world’s greatest running blog (right?) …

Not only will you be showing you believe in an alternative running publication that forgoes clickbait and ad revenue in favor of honest stories, reviews and information …

Not only will you continue to get fantastic advice and stories from the most awesome women ever to grace the earth with their running shoes …

You’ll also be the first to know when we’re trying something new, looking for new bloggers or starting a project. We’ll ask for feedback, and when you give it, we’ll listen!

Also, stickers!

And getting in on the ground floor has its own nifty little benefit! Until April 8th, all patrons will receive a limited edition Rainbow Sal Track Star magnet (designed by yours truly) in the mail with a handwritten thank you note.

Because all the details are right there on the Patreon Page, that’s all I have for now. Still, I want you all to know that this is a work in progress – criticism will help me here! If you hate the way I did the Patreon tiers, tell me! If you think Sal stickers and magnets are dumb, tell me! If you want more information, tell me! I take comments, questions or rotten tomatoes* via:

  • comment below (comments are once again open!)
  • post in the forums (they’re starting to cook!)
  • or drop me a line by email: info at saltyrunning dot com.

Get your magnet!

  1. I know just about nothing about making money online, but is merchandise something that could make some money to support the site? I would totally buy a Salty Running hat and shirt (women’s cut, of course!) if I could.

    1. Thanks for the input, Megan! That’s definitely something we’ve tried and are going to try again. It’s in the works!

For now, we have some of our merch available as rewards for our Patreon patrons, but creating more merch takes some seed funding. I hope to have some options available to everyone soon, and my plan is to reward patrons who stick around by offering them discounts and special first dibs on merch once I get it going!

  2. I’ve loved this blog for a long time and wouln’t mind helping out. Does Patreon allow one time contributions a’la GoFundMe? If not, you might benefit from having a way to do the one-timers as well.

    1. Hi Steve! Thank you so much for wanting to support us! There is a loophole you can use to offer a one-time donation through our Patreon page. You can check it out below in my reply to Margaret’s comment. As I said there, I the main reason I ask for monthly support instead of a one-time donation is that ongoing donations help us plan for our future – and shows us you know we’re worth not only the cash, but also your ongoing activity as a member of our community.

Whatever you decide to do, thank you so much for reading the site and for your generosity!

    1. Hi Margaret! I really appreciate your wanting to support us! There is a loophole you can use to offer a one-time donation through our Patreon page. Here’s how, according to Patreon:

“For now, the best way for a patron subscribe to a creator with a one-time payment is to become a patron then simply cancel their membership after they have been successfully billed. You’ll know when you have been billed because you’ll receive an email confirmation stating your payment has successfully processed.”

Please note, however, that I can only affordably send out rewards for patrons who support us on an ongoing basis. That’s one of the reasons (although not the main reason) I would encourage you to consider supporting us monthly if you can!

The main reason I ask for monthly support instead of a one-time donation is that ongoing donations help us plan for our future – and shows us you know we’re worth it! Plus, ongoing support helps you sustain involvement as a member of our community.

Whatever you decide to do, please know that I am EPICALLY grateful for any support you offer!
