Pumpkin’s Non-Training Log: The Tendinitis Chronicles

Is it really July already?? Somehow the month of June seemed to get away from me, and I’ve been a little MIA on the Salty Running front. I have the month of June off from my job every year, so my schedule tends to derail for a few weeks. As of my last training log at the beginning of June, I was dealing with what I thought was a minor flare up of tendinitis. Having had it in the past, the pain this time around was much less intense, and so I figured the recovery time would be minimal. This has not proven to be true, as it is now 6 weeks post-marathon and still not running on a regular basis. Last week I had a glimmer of hope that I was on the upswing, and was able to run 3 times with little pain. After that third run, the pain returned more noticeably, and I tried and failed to run two days later.

Injury sucks. Injury is frustrating. I am trying to keep it all in perspective and am thanking my lucky stars that I have biking as a good means of cross training. But nothing really gives you the same rush as a good run. For whatever reason, all of my major injuries seem to take place in the Summer, which means I miss out on some good running weather (but it also means I GET to miss out on some really HOT running weather too).

I’ve done a lot of not running over the past month, so I’ll try and give a quick recap of my activities

Week of June 6-12

Monday- 4 mile run. Probably not a great idea, but wanting to test the leg and see how it felt. Not awful, but definitely noticeable pain.

Tuesday- 5 mile run. Definitely not a good idea. Much more pain. Realizing I really do just need to take a break and let my tendinitis calm down. Frustrated.

Wednesday: 25 minutes elliptical, 38 minutes spin class

Thursday: Out of town. Did some walking along Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis and mad that I couldn’t run!

Friday: Still out of town.

Saturday: Biking with friends. 31.25 miles, 1:58 total time.

Sunday: 30 min elliptical, 1.5 mile incline walk on the treadmill.

Week of June 13-19

Monday: Again I tried to run, but it ended up as a 2 mile run/ walk. Did some elliptical for an hour and a 13 mile very slow bike ride with the family that night.

Tuesday: 30 minutes elliptical

Wednesday: 45 minute walk- 2.75 miles

Thursday: 10 mile bike ride in the wind

Friday: 31 minutes elliptical, 2.25 mile walk

Saturday: Tried to beat the rainy weather that was moving in- went for a quick bike ride in the morning. 22.2 miles in 1:27

Sunday: Off

Week of June 20-26

Monday: 1 hour elliptical

Tuesday-Sunday: Off. Went on a trip with hubby and kids to the North Shore of Minnesota. Absolutely breathtaking scenery along lake Superior. Did some hiking and a lot of eating on our trip. Had tendinitis not been a factor, I would have loved to do some running while on vacation. I was able to sneak away from the family for a bit and do a solo hike in one of the state parks and tested out my legs for some very light jogging on the trails. Surprisingly my legs felt pretty good and relatively pain free. Hope is beginning to return that I can run soon!

Minnesota is a truly beautiful state. Went for a hike at a nearby state park during our vacation.

Week of June 27-July 3

Monday: encouraged by the lack of pain during my jog on the hiking trails while on vacation, I decided it would be a good time to test out my legs for an official run. I did 3 miles and with very minimal pain. This was the best I’ve felt since the marathon. My pace was slowwwwww and my heart rate was HIGH, but still- a run is a run. It is crazy though how fast your fitness can leave you.

Tuesday: Spin class 36 minutes, Core class 27 minutes, and a 19 mile bike ride in the afternoon

Wednesday: Another run! Also pain free! Slightly better pace, slightly better HR. 3.61 miles.ย  After my run, I hit the road with a friend and we took our bikes out to a gorgeous paved trail about an hour from home. We did 60.71 miles in 3:55!

Thursday: 26.6 mile bike ride in the wind. It was a really chilly evening.

Friday: Another run! But… a little pain near the end. I tested out my new Mizuno Wave Paradox, and they were awful. My toes were numb for most of the run. 3.6 miles with an improved pace and HR. Wondered if my leg was going to be angry with me.

Saturday: Bike ride with a couple of friends. 40.23 miles. A big week for biking!

Sunday: Failed run attempt. Went out with the plan of just doing 3-4 miles, but after 1/2 mile I knew that I was doing more harm than good by continuing to run, so I walked the rest. 2 miles total. Frustration level: high.

Run total for the week: 10 miles, Bike total for the week: 146 miles!

Was able to get away for a few hours to bike the Central Lakes Trail about an hour away from my house. I wish every Summer day was like this one!

I'm a college mental health counselor, runner, cyclist, wife, and mom to two strong-willed children. I started running in 2011 after the birth of my last child after years of love-hate relationships with fitness. My favorite distance is the half marathon, but I love the challenge of tackling the marathon. My biggest challenge is the mental aspect of racing, but my greatest strength is I'm stubborn and never give up! I'm a free spirit, an open book, and try to be authentic both in real life as well as in my internet life. Running has given me a place to face my fears, chase goals, and stay humble. Side note: I love cats and coffee and tacos.
