Poppy’s training log – 8.7.16

I think the past few weeks of travel and training caught up to me as I spent the first part of this week feeling pretty wiped out.  I ran as slowly as I needed to on my easy days and ended up having to abbreviate my midweek workout.  Thankfully, I rebounded by the end of the week thanks to reducing the number of baby jogger runs, getting more sleep, and getting a massage.  I had a really good long run on Sunday, so it was nice to be able to turn the week around.  More hot and humid weather this week, but there were some drops in humidity here and there (though it was never not humid).

This Rescue Bot’s name aptly describes my training environment at the moment.

Monday: 6 miles in the morning w/ the kids in the double.  4 very easy solo miles in the afternoon.

Tuesday: 8 miles in the morning w/ the kids in the double, over to Bucknell.  8x100m strides while there.  I felt pretty clunky on those and perhaps had some forewarning of how the workout the next day would go.   4 easy solo miles in the afternoon.

Wednesday: 13 miles w/ workout.  Plan was 4 x 3200m @ 5:55 pace w/ 400m recovery jog between.  Had to cut it after the third rep because I got very fatigued in the middle of the third one and started getting chills and feeling nauseous on the recovery jog after that interval.  Added in 4 x 200m after that though just to get a little turnover in before calling it a day.  Husband-coach and the kids showed up at the end of the workout.  My little guy joined me for part of the cool down and it made me quickly put the disappointment of an incomplete workout behind me.

Thursday:  6 miles in the morning w/ the whole family, hubs pushed the double the whole way to give me a break.  4 miles in the afternoon.

Friday: 12 miles in the morning.  Another family run where the hubs pushed the double the whole time.  The middle ~6 miles were done on the Bucknell indoor track while the hubs and kids played on the pole vault mats.  I did 8x100m strides on the track while there.

Saturday: easy 8 miles w/ the family, hubs pushed the double again.

Sunday: 18 miles w/ ~12.4 miles at steady state.  Did this on the nearby neighborhood loop (just over a mile in length).  Did 12 laps and averaged ~6:22 pace for the 12+ miles.  Felt good throughout, really strong.  This is the best I felt all week, so it was a nice note to end the week on.

I'm a licensed massage therapist with a background in biochemistry and also a mother of two. After almost two years of focusing on shorter race distances, I am back on the marathon training horse. My next goal race is the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. I write mostly about health and science as they relate to running as well as being part of a running family.
