Mr Pesto isn’t bad with the camera! Action snap from Sunday’s 5k

Salties!

Here we have it, the second last installment of my (condensed) prep for the Indy Monumental Marathon on November 5. While I haven’t gotten in nearly the volume as my first (failed) training cycle – I am healthy and feeling strong. It’s nearly go time!

Themes from this week:
– The weather sucked, a lot. DC experienced a heatwave for the majority of the week. It was over 80, on numerous occasions, in October. This, to me constitutes a heatwave.
– All the ice cream keeps disappearing from our freezer.
– I like running 70miles with an off day.

Monday: 6mi recovery from yesterday’s dress rehearsal. Not feeling too bad from the first and only 20!

Tuesday: (am) 9mi cruise (7:30s) on a new trail I found. Sweet success!
(pm) PT appointment. Strength/core work.
3.5 mi easy shakeout – why am I running in a sports bra?

Wednesday: Easy 10miles. Fall, WHERE DID YOU GO?!

Thursday: The first time I’ve wanted to cry in a workout in a very long time. I’m talking pre-hiatus long time, like 2010. At 4:45am when I started the warmup it was 72 degrees and 89% humidity. Read: It was pretty ugly.
The workout: 2mi warmup.
GOAL = 4 x 2mi repeats @ 5:54 pace with 2min rest. 4 x 400s @ 75sec
ACTUAL = 2mi: 12:06, 11:53, 11:55. 11:59. 400s: 75, 77, 81, 77
Not awful, but failed to hit my times. But, I managed a 75s 400 after all that so I can’t be too upset. That’s a lie, I was bummed. I called coach after the first reps and tried to negotiate the workout, I was not successful and instead wasted 45seconds whining.
2mi cooldown.
(pm) 40min pool run

Friday: OFF. What? Two days off in two weeks, this is madness … something must be brewing.

Saturday: Easy 10miles with the DCRR along the C&O canal in Georgetown. Hellishly windy, all I have to say about that.

Sunday: Last long run before the big workout! 2hours. A friend was directing a 5k so I hopped in there in the middle of my run for a little but of controlled pace work. I did 8.5miles prior to the race, 3.1mi, and then ran whatever rounds out 16.6miles after. Average pace for the run was 7:16 which included an 18:30 and some change 5k. Managed to beat off all the boys (and girls) for the overall W – it was a good day!
(pm) 30 min pool run

WANTED: Whoever is under that Army issued blanket for consuming copious amounts of ice cream
WANTED: Whoever is under that Army issued blanket for consuming copious amounts of ice cream

Totals:
Run – 70miles
Pool run – 70mins
Strength – only what I did at PT, I’ve been slacking in this department of late. You can only do so much.

I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience while sipping on wine & coffee in Northern Virginia. Together with my husband and Rhodesian Ridgeback, Gracie we battle to keep the Tupperware cupboard organized for more than two days at time. I recently ran my first marathon (2:51) and am excited for what is to come. I like to ramble about running post injury, finding a work-life balance and running quickly.

  1. Solid week! Especially with the weather here — what was up with that?! It really was like summer again, and then the wind on Saturday. . . . Anyway, I think you’re going to crush it in a couple weeks!

    Also, your dog is so cute!!!!
