New York City Marathon Update: What to Do When Your Goal Marathon is Canceled

Mary Lou was so ready for 26.2 this weekend. After Hurricane Sandy hit, what did she do?

Mary Lou, author of the senior running blog, Still a Runner, trained for and was set to run the New York City Marathon on Sunday. However, all that became uncertain after Hurricane Sandy hit. Last week we chose Mary Lou as our commenter of the week for her comment describing the conflicted feelings she had about whether to head to NYC to run the marathon or not. She promised to update us and she did! Below is Mary Lou’s report of what she decided and how her weekend played out. 

After a morning run on Friday, I pushed the “cancel” button on the NYC Marathon website and set about with calls & emails, canceling arrangements for transportation and for lodging and visit with friends in Brooklyn.  Later in the day, the official cancellation of the race was announced.

I am not surprised at what I see and hear today (Sunday) about runners who had already arrived in NYC as well as local runners establishing ad-hoc groups to help where they see the need.  Whether they are lending a hand to someone in a tough situation or sharing their race training tips, I find most runners are positive people who seek solutions and help with what needs to be done.

So, Saturday, instead of an Expo visit I did a casual run along our riverfront here in Central PA with friends getting in a medium distance run prior to next weekend’s Aspire Harrisburg Marathon  I will be participating in a 60 & Over Relay team at that marathon.

Today, the now-defunct 2012 NYC marathon day, I joined my local running club in a 6K run (our race director pointed out that those of us originally scheduled for NY could run the course 7 times and get in our marathon distance) with a post-race Adopt-a-Highway cleanup.  It was good to spend time with running friends breathing in the crisp air and doing a small part to take care of our earth.

  1. Good for you for doing something to give back and save the Earth and your community. I love the stories coming out of all the runners giving back.

    1. I know right?! I particularly love how Mary Lou decided to do something in her own community. It’s a good reminder that there are ways to make a difference and help others every day of the week, not just in the wake of a tragedy. So glad she shared her story!

  2. For me, any thoughts of trying to schedule a substitute event just feels like a ‘rebound’. Better to grieve the love you lost rather than end up with one who is a mistake. Feelings get hurt. I just blogged my brains out on it, adding to the chatter.
