This week is yet another recovery week for me. All week I continued to have some muscle soreness / tightness after every run – even if it was a short, easy run. It is funny how we are ready to recover from the marathon very quickly mentally, but it takes the legs a lot longer to get with the program.
On Monday, my legs were a little tight from the 5k Sunday. At Girls on the Run Monday evening, the girls really, really wanted to do coach tag again. Not only were my legs not up for it, but it wasn’t a good idea for the girls either after their race. So we ran/walked for 35 minutes with some chasing involved, but nothing too intense.
Tuesday I rested.
Wednesday I woke up early to log a little over 5 miles (8:50 pace). This was my first early morning run since before Chicago. It is amazing how much better I feel during the day when I start it with a run! Don’t get me wrong, I am loving my recovery month sleep, but early morning runs definitely do wonders for your energy level. Highlight of my day: I met with my coach for lunch and we set a plan for the spring 2013 season. Stay tuned!
Wednesday night we had speed work at Girls on the Run. We ran a relay and each person ended up running 8 x 100 meter sprints with short rests in between. All of mine were right around 5:20 pace. It was fun to get the legs moving, but I could definitely feel the fatigue in them still and my gait seemed funny when trying to run fast. We added in a .5 cool down and called it a really fun night!
Friday I ran with my son after work. Instead of staying on the roads, he REALLY wanted to run in the school forest. That kid is a born cross country runner. We ended up logging a little over 3 miles and hit some big trail uphills and downhills along the way. FUN way to start the weekend.
Saturday I had an awesome run after my son’s football game. It was 45 degrees and sunny. 8.15 miles @ 8:40 pace. My legs and heels are still making a little noise, but I definitely feel like I am turning a corner in my recovery.
Sunday I ran 5.5 miles with my son (9:24 pace). It was a beautiful day and we had a blast. He even taught me how to count in French. 🙂
Total: 26 miles
Next week will be my last recovery week, but I will continue adding volume.
