Mint’s Training Log – 03.31.2013

Happy Easter!IMGP9745

This week was my peak training week for the Parkinson’s Half Marathon on April 20.  My coach sent me an e-mail telling me it was the big week.  He advised me to get extra rest and eat well.  Boy did I mess that up.  I’ll discuss more of that this week on Salty Running.  For now, I’ll give you the numbers.

Monday is my rest day.  I slept in and did my arm weights and core work.

Tuesday I planned to run my speed workout with a friend after work.  Unfortunately, work got very busy and I did not get out on time.  I also felt really tired, so I decided to just run easy and defer my speed workout until Wednesday morning.  62 minutes / 7 miles / 8:56 pace.

Wednesday morning, I hit the treadmill for a hard workout.  I did a 2 mile warm up, then ran 2 x (2 miles at 7:16 pace; .25 mi recovery); 3 x (.5 miles at 6:40 pace; .25 mi recovery); 3 x (.25 miles at 6:16 pace; .25 recovery); 12 minute cool down with 4 x 30 second pickups at 6:00 pace.  Good lawd that was hard.  90 minutes / 11.5 miles / 7:53 average pace.

Thursday I ran another easy run.  62 minutes / 7 miles / 8:58 pace.

Friday it was time to bring on the speed again, but this workout felt like an epic fail.  I did a 15 minute warm up, then 4 x .125 miles at 6:16 pace with .125 mile recoveries.  The short intervals were too fast and it all felt too hard.  Then I had 4 x .625 miles at 6:40 on tap with 2 minute recoveries.  I couldn’t hit my paces and I stopped a couple of times to catch my breath during each one.  I started the last one and after about a quarter of a mile, I decided to pull the plug on the misery.  I skipped my scheduled 400s and striders, did a quick cool down and ran home.  42 minutes / 5.32 miles / 7:53 average pace.

Saturday my hip flexors, hamstrings and feet were sore.  Even though my speed workout was unsuccessful, clearly it took a toll on my body.  I ran an hour easy. The sun was shining, the temps were reasonable and my pace was a little faster. 60 minutes / 7 miles / 8:41 pace.

IMGP9746Sunday was my long run!  Again the sun was shining and it was a beautiful (although windy) day.  It was almost 50 degrees and it was the first run of the year for me in a skirt.  I wish I could say the run was easy, but it wasn’t.  My legs were a little sore throughout.  Fortunately, I stopped at home with 2.5 miles to go and my sweet son said he’d run with me the last couple of miles.  Brilliant.  And so fun to have his company again (he also ran with me part of Saturday’s run).  2 hours 32 minutes / 17 miles / 8:59 pace.

TOTAL: 54.8 miles
