Salty Spice Name: Mace

Age: 50

Country/State/General Vicinity: Boston, MA.

Year you ran your first mile without walking: 1987

Year you became ‘a runner’: 1988

Why you started running:  To lose weight.  (Like that’s ever gonna happen!)

Why you run now:  If I don’t, I don’t feel alive.

Month/Year you became a Salty Blogger:  September of 2012

What is your voice on Salty Running?  The voice crying in the wilderness, looking for the ice-cream truck.

What is your favorite category of posts on Salty Running?   Anything cheeky and sardonic. I love posts like What Lindsay Lohan can teach us about running and S**t Non-Runners Say.

What’s the most you ever spent on a sport bra? A Frog Bra from Title IX, about fifty bucks.

First race: A 5K Turkey Trot in Charleston, S.C.  Was so proud I didn’t have to walk!

Last race:  Kiawah Island Half-Marathon, 2010.

3 Races you most wish you could run:  The Boston Marathon, The Marine Corps Marathon, the Mt. Washington Road Race.

Favorite race:   Cooper River Bridge Run, Charleston, S.C. Amazing views from the bridge, great freebies after the race.

Best running advice you’ve ever gotten:  Listen to your body. It knows what it needs and will tell you, if you pay close attention.

First Running Shoe:  Nike Pegasus.

Do you run with a watch? What kind?  No, but I use Nike Plus iPod.

Running goals for 2012:  Crack a nine-minute mile, if only once, and run Kiawah again, only better.

Current/Main/Favorite Shoe:  Anything from Nike with a plus sign. Whatever’s on sale.

How many pairs of running shoes are currently in your house? Four Nikes and a New Balance.

Running hero(es):  Kathrine Switzer, the late Dr. George Sheehan, and Ryan and Sarah Hall.

Favorite Running Partner(s): My donkey, Jo-Jo, and all my imaginary friends.

Non-running hobby:  I’m a single parent with four kids. What’s a hobby?

Who’s in your household? Four kids: 10, 13, 18 and 19; two donkeys, two cats, and a crazed border collie that chases invisible sheep.

Occupation (how you get your shoe money): Writing and editing.

Would you like to add anything? It took me a long time to realize this, but skinny people don’t own the roads.

I'm a single mother of four who has been running injury-free for 27 years, astonishingly without ever losing any weight. I'm a writer and editor near Boston, and author of "Honey, Do You Need a Ride? Confessions of a Fat Runner."
