Apparel Review: Cinnamon Tests Gear Bunch Leggings

At first glance, Gear Bunch doesn’t look like the kind of company you’d go to for running clothes, but one look at their incredibly extensive selection of printed leggings and my curiosity was piqued.

I love wearing crazy prints on my legs: socks, leggings, you name it. If it’s striped or plaid or has a psychedelic cat printed on it, I want to rock it hard! So even though I suspected these were fashion leggings and not high-performance running tights, I wanted to try them and hoped they would make an excellent solution for runners like me who like wearing running clothes that take fun to the next level. I can see some of these prints making excellent costumes for themed runs!

So how do these funky fashion-forward leggings perform?

I’ve worn running tights from a variety of traditional activewear manufacturers, but one thing I’ve noticed is that I always come back to the fun prints even when they’re a little uncomfortable and lacking in features. A couple of years ago, when we reviewed those cheapie leggings from Amazon, I got four pairs and I actually still wear them all the time even though I constantly have to hike them up. My favorite leggings, my Cadillac that I save for when I want to feel great, are my only pair of Lululemon crops (four years old).

Out of the Package

After tearing open the shipping envelope and gently opening the plastic wrapper, the first thing I noticed was that these leggings were soft! So incredibly, unbelievably soft. I also noticed that they had regular seams inside, not flat-sewn like most premium athletic apparel. They don’t have pockets. They do feature a printed tag, but there’s also a little paper tag with washing instructions that you may have to cut out if you don’t like tags poking you when you run.

Running in these leggings was really comfortable! The fabric is smooth, so I was a little worried that they would slip down like my cheapie leggings, but they really didn’t at all. The yoga-style waistband holds everything up without being too tight on the waist. I tried them both with underwear and commando and was still comfortable. No riding up, no riding down.

I got tons of compliments! People love the awesome gold mandala print (which is available in lots of color combinations). Best of all: After my run they didn’t stink! Almost all of my running pants come away from a run smelling like a locker room, but these stayed surprisingly fresh.

Overall Experience

I wore these for easy runs and a long run and felt great in them. I would definitely wear them during a workout too, but only if it was very chilly out; they’re not as thick as my regular athletic pants, but they’re still pretty warm. I wore them when the temperature was in the mid-thirties and forties (Farenheit).

The down side? Well…it’s not much of a down side for me, but these leggings have no pockets. I wear a SPIbelt almost every run and it was cold enough that I wore my jacket with these, but I know how y’all runners are. If Gear Bunch wants to market to us, they gotta put at least a little key pocket in there. The comfy waistband is great, but it might even be a little improved if they double its thickness to make a slit-style pocket. Personally I don’t like zippers on my back, but a zip pocket at the hip would be really amazing.

My Take

Overall, I loved these leggings for running! I’d honestly wear them anywhere but I really liked how comfortable they were during my runs. The soft fabric is luxurious and makes up for the high price a bit. And the print is really cool. I am definitely eyeing a couple more of their styles.

I’d recommend Gear Bunch Leggings for any runner who is looking for soft, lightweight leggings for medium-low temperatures and loves fun, amazing prints, or who just wants some cool leggings to wear around town. As long as you don’t need performance features (read: pockets).

Verdict: I give 4 out of 5 snails to Gear Bunch Leggings!
