Coriander’s Training Log: 8.11.13 & 8.18.13

Work is kicking my butt! I’m so glad I’m not training for a 100 miler right now, or else I’d probably be only running and sleeping and working and have no time otherwise. So I owe you two weeks! Is it obvious I have somehow lost track of what day it is?

Week ending 8.11:

Monday: Rest/60 minute yoga class. I need yoga more often.

Tuesday: 70 minutes/7.6 mile steady state run. 20 minute warmup with 35 minutes at 8:51 average pace and a 15 minute cool down. I’m starting to look forward to my Tuesday speed workouts and holding the speed interval pace is getting easier and easier each week. It’s been a month that I’ve been working with my coach and I’m already seeing some improvements in speed.

Wednesday: 37 minutes/4 miles with the Second Sole group. We had a 5.5 mile route planned, but I stuck to the plan and cut it short. I feel like every time I’ve had a chance to go to the group runs I’ve been cutting it short and people give  me a weird look when they see I drove there (since we moved, I live less than a mile from the store). It’s been a struggle for me going from constantly always running more miles than most people I know to having a plan and running faster and shorter.

Thursday: 70 minute/7 mile easy run. I got up early before work to run and had to hustle through it. It felt like I was running a lot faster than I was though!

Friday: Rest.

Saturday: 90 minute thirds progression run. 10 miles. This was a rest week, so my “long” run was a speedy one! My friend, Erin, had 16 on her plan, so she ran to my house and we ran down to the park and around the area. We ran the first 30 minutes at an easy pace, picked it up for the next 30 minutes and then she let me go on the last 30 minutes so I could hit the paces (8:50) I was supposed to. It was a fun run and I’m hoping another one comes up on the schedule soon!

Sunday: 60 minute easy run. I hit the trails for the first time in a while! I ditched the watch and ran a route I’ve ran a billion times. It was so relaxing to get out there on the trails again!

Week ending 8.18:

Monday: More rest!

Tuesday: Hill repeats! 20 minute warm up, 5 90-second repeats at 5K pace with a recovery jog, 25 minute cool down. I hit the paved all-purpose trail at North Chagrin and picked the biggest hill I could find. My coach gave me directions about form and how fast I should be going up the hill. Maybe I picked a hill that was too steep or I was holding back, but I was about 45 seconds off 5K pace.

Wednesday: 37 minutes/4 miles easy. I was so exhausted from work. I had just worked two nights in a row (Tuesday until 1 am) and had one more closing shift coming up that day, so I slept as much as I could and got a quick run in before going back to work.

Thursday: 67 minutes/7 miles easy. Still exhausted! And I had to get up at 5 am to do this run before working early that day.

Friday: 17 miles roads. I had to move my long run of the week to Friday because of my work schedule. I got started way too late. I felt really great for the first 14 miles, even going up a mile-long hill around mile 13 and felt like I was flying. But around mile 15, I started to bonk. The last few miles were completely miserable, but at least I got it done!

Saturday: Rest.

Sunday: 50 minutes/5 miles. I got up early again to run before work. So glad I did too because it definitely set the tone for a good day at work!

Trail and 100 mile ultra runner who still loves a good road marathon every now and then. Lifetime Northeast Ohio resident that dreams of the mountains out west, but loves CLE too much. Sometimes a vegan, sometimes does yoga, always loves a good craft beer and post race donuts.
