Coriander’s Training Log: 2.24.13

Like every other week this month, I could have run more miles. But I’m just over getting up and sliding around on the ice in the dark to get miles in before work. My weekday runs will stay short for probably another week and then no more excuses!

Also, after three weeks in a row of working the weekend, I finally had a weekend off! Now that the weekend is over, I’m sitting here pretty beat up and happy after a hard weekend of running.

Monday: Rest/60 minutes of yoga. I was having some minor hip pain. I can only really describe it as in the underwear line area (if that makes any sense). So because of that, yoga it was. I took my boyfriend to his first-ever yoga class. For someone who is used to Army PT, “it moved too slow,” but I enjoyed it.

Tuesday: 6 miles/10 minute ab workout. Got up and ran 6 before work. I had a good, fast finish, but it takes me about four miles until I feel good enough to run sub-9:00 miles in the morning. I think I need to wake up earlier.

Wednesday: 5 miles. I skipped running in the morning because it snowed overnight and I was pretty tired. I opted to just do the evening run with Second Sole. My boyfriend came (another first for him) and I did the first three miles with him, then quickly got two more in. We had a potluck/surprise baby shower for one of our friends after the run, so it was a great evening.

Thursday: 7 miles. This was supposed to be a steady-state run at marathon pace (9:25), but my splits were all over the place and I ened up with a 9:49 average. I took a different route and it was lightly freezing rain at the time, so I think I’ll try this run again this week.

Friday: Rest day!

Saturday: 23 miles. For the first time since I ran the 50 miler in June, I got to go down to Mohican State Park! Mohican is a very, very hilly park in the middle of nowhere and is one of my favorite places ever. I ran in the first Ohio Slugfest 50K. It was a fat ass run, so you can run however much you like, the course was a 4.5 mile loop and there was no entry fee or penalty for DNF’ing. I did 5 loops total, the first two with the group I went down with and the final three on my own. The loop was hilly, with lots of downhill and a nice, steep climb right at the end to the pavilion that served as the start/finish. My final loop was my best, I finished it in about 50 minutes! I was so pumped after and I seriously am already dreaming of the day when I get to go back to Mohican (I’m thinking at the end of March).

Sunday: 10 miles. I woke up this morning and my quads were completely trashed from the downhills Saturday! I had even worked on cross-stepping down the hills too. This run was supposed to be 12 to round out 35 for the weekend, but the trails were icy, I was alone and bored and after 10, I just wanted some pancakes and a nap.

Total: 51 miles. I’m so excited to have finally broken 50! I really needed this week as a confidence booster that I can really run 100 miles. I have about three months of training ahead and I’m really looking forward to it. And my first race of 2013 is Saturday! It’s my first road 50K ever. Fingers crossed it doesn’t snow too much!
