Cilantro’s Training Log – 6.28.2015

This was a big week for me in my Burning River 100M training.  I had my first real ultra test in the BlackHills 50M since I was hospitalized, and how I felt and performed in the race would indicate to me if I was really healthy enough to be running ultra distances and if my tri-ultra training was working.  It was an interesting week, and, overall, a success.

Personally, I’m in a really good place right now, despite entering into what will most likely be one of the hardest years of my life (Tenure-track job search and dissertation + everything that goes along with that such as the constant work towards publications, conference submissions, book proposal, and work).  The stress is high, but this is what I have wanted to do my entire life – so I am determined the enjoy the journey, both the highs and the lows.  Plus, I have a lot to look forward to this summer – Burning River with the salties, seeing my family in August, half-iron in September, and academic conferences all fall.  Great times ahead.  In fairness, I’m always in a happier place when I feel like running is going well.  But even without it, I’m super grateful for everything in my life.  It is good.

The workouts:

Monday: 60 mn easy spinning (15 miles), 1 mile swimming (37 minutes).  I was feeling the workouts from the Friday-Sunday grind (44 miles run, 40 miles cycled), so I took things slow.

Tuesday: 8 miles total, 3x1m repeats (paces: 7:04, 6:53, 6:55).  This was my last hard effort run before Black Hills and these felt really good.  I could have pushed faster, but I didn’t want to do too much before the race.

Wednesday: 25 miles cycled, with 30 mn in Zone 2.  Taught yoga in the afternoon.

Thursday: Rest.  I drove the Sturgis today, and aside from running in and out of gas stations every hour or so along the way, I did a whole lot of nothing today.  Delightful.

Friday: 3.5 miles with 4 strides (pace: 8:59). I like to do some easy miles before a race.  It keeps me from feeling sluggish, and also from going completely pre-race crazy.

Saturday: BlackHills 50M (recap to come, so no spoilers here!)

Sunday: Uff da.  Things that are hard: stairs, sitting, breathing, living…  I drove home today, and then did 30 minutes of very slow walking to get the blood flowing.  But oh how I hurt!

Totals: 66.5 miles run, 40 miles cycled, 1 mile swum, 30 mn walking.

Looking at the numbers, I didn’t do a lot training-wise, but that was as intended.  This week is an official recovery week, so I expect similar numbers to last week, except there will be more cycling and swimming and very little running.  Next week is my final peak week before the Burning River taper begins, and I am really looking forward to the taper (famous last words).

    1. Thank you! I’m feeling better today (and even able to go slowly down stairs). Hoping to be able to put in a few miles tomorrow!
