Monday: X Train

1 hr elliptical, 30 min bike

3 mile easy run on indoor track

I was dead tired. And why doesn’t this hill look as bad as it actually was?!

Tuesday: Speed

2 mile warm up, 8 X short hill, 1 mile cool down ( a little under 4 miles total)

I was feeling tired and it was cold out.  Speed work is the most difficult run of the week for me in terms of motivation, esp. when I have to do it alone.  I had not done hill repeats in awhile and it was a nice change from the track.  This was a useful workout, although pretty short.

Wednesday: Run

10 miles-treadmill (8:30ish pace)

I felt guilty for not running many miles the day before.  This day I had an hour drive, two a.m. concerts, another hour drive, then a 3 and a half hour drive.  So I ran 10 miles on the treadmill at 5 a.m..  Whatttt??  Not like me, I know.  It was mostly because I woke up at 4:30 a.m. and couldn’t sleep.

Thursday: Tempo Run

5 miles (6:58), 1 mile cool down

I was thinking of doing a track workout to improve my shorter races but again I had no motivation.  I started out just running but went quicker because it was freaking cold out.  I did the second mile faster and then thought..what the hell, I might as well do a tempo.

5 mile splits were 7:31, 7:04, 6:50, 6:45, 6:44

Friday: Run and X train

5 miles with a trail group (I really don’t care about pace on trail runs…plus my watch doesn’t work anyway).  I threw in two hill sprints at the end, since we had to run up two giant hills anyway.

Saturday: Long run

13 miles (7:35)

I went to a group run on a half marathon course.  I found two women to run with who were right around my pace.  Actually I would have run slower alone!  But it was a great workout-the course had a gradual incline from mile 8 or so.  It just got harder and harder.  I was going to add on more miles at the end but I was beat and cold.

Sunday: Run

10 miles-slow treadmill

It was snowy and I’m not as tough about the weather as I was in my younger days (as in last year!).  Most of the run was slow and I was bored out of my mind.  To mix it up I added in faster quarter mile intervals from mile 6 on.

This was a good week for me, both running and healthy eating wise.  I realized I need to run with people more often because it really helps with motivation.  It is hard when I am travelling but I will try to go to groups when I can.  I ran every day this week which is unusual for me, but only because some of the runs were shorter.

I am a dedicated runner and classical musician. I am currently chasing a sub-3 hour marathon (3:00:38 PR). I often feel like the underdog going up against "serious" runners-I took up running after college, I do not have a typical "runner's body type", and I am mostly self-coached. I travel a lot to perform with different orchestras and run when I can, where I can. I love to (over) eat and that is my number one motivation for running! Follow me as I chase my goals!
