Catnip’s training logs – weeks ending 2/22 and 3/1/15

I missed y’all last week, so I’m smooshing the last two weeks of training into one post. Neither are very exciting because I got some sort of plague! It seems like I always get pretty sick once in a marathon training cycle — anyone else? It started off with puking in bed (!) on Friday and then feeling weak, shaky, and not hungry for two days (and missed my planned indoor 5k!). I felt well enough to eat some food and go to work on Monday, but Tuesday my office started feeling warm. By the time I realized it was me and not the heating system I nearly passed out in an evaluation with clients. It took another couple days to feel back to normal, and then I always find it difficult to get back into the habit of daily runs. Fortunately I still have 8 weeks until the Glass City Marathon, so this should just be a minor setback.

Monday: 3.6 miles @ 8:24 pace in the morning, 8.5 @ 8:29 in the evening. Felt pretty unmotivated, but felt refreshed by the run.

Tuesday: Feeling a little congested and throat a bit scratchy. Preventative day off. Took a hot bath and read a book instead.

Wednesday: 12 miles @ 7:34 average including 30 minutes tempo at 6:09 pace (bathroom break after 14 minutes). Felt pretty good! Remember, a 2:43:00 marathon is 6:13 pace…

Thursday: 3.5 @ 8:50 pace in the morning, 8 @ 8:37 after work.

Friday: OMG, SICK!

Saturday: Had entered myself in a college indoor 5000m but even sitting upright made me feel shaky. No.

Sunday: Still shaky. Managed a short shopping trip with JB, then had to lie down to rest.

total: 35.6 miles

Monday: Made it through the work day, but decided to rest in the evening.

Tuesday: Left work early and spent the evening in bed wondering if I’d ever feel normal.

Wednesday: 4 miles @ 8:43 pace feeling good! 2.1 @ 8:49 in the evening before I realized it was pretty stupid to jump back in with a double after being sick.

Thursday: Took forever to get JB to bed, then went to bed myself.

Friday: Parents visited & I really didn’t feel like running. In retrospect, this was definitely a good idea to take this extra day off.

Saturday: 4 miles OUTDOORS with my friend Liz! 6.3 miles @ 8:18 average in the evening.

Sunday: 15.4 @ 8:28 on the treadmill. The boredom was countered by the happy feeling of getting back on track with running!

total: 31.8 miles

I'm a 20-year veteran of competitive running, USATF certified coach, mom of a toddler -- and still trying to set PRs. I write about training from 5k to marathon, motherhood and competitive running, and the elite side of the sport. The 5k is my favorite race (16:56 PR) but I've got a score to settle with the marathon.
