Catnip’s training log – week ending 6/8/14

Another week, another race! Did I mention I love to race?

I was a little nervous for the Columbus 10k on Sunday. First of all, I feel like my endurance is in the proverbial toilet after pregnancy. Second, I’d been feeling pretty tired late in the week and thirdly, I doubted my ability to run a full 10km without a bathroom break. Looking at my recent race results, a goal of 38:00 would be somewhat of a stretch, but I thought I could possibly break 39:00 with good pacing. My friend Dustin offered to run with me and talk me through the tough parts and that made all the difference! There were a few times where I was on the verge of mentally imploding and just hearing him say “relax” helped me hold myself together. I finished just two seconds slower than last year (when I was pregnant…) in 38:53! Goal met!

Monday: 3.4 miles/30 minutes in the morning, 6.3/53:48 in the evening. Rough night of sleep, but running made me feel more alert.

Tuesday: 8 miles/1:12:45. Short core routine. Another night up and down with baby JB. Hello 4-month sleep regression?

Wednesday: 3.2 miles/30:00 in the morning, 6.6/50:22 in the evening with 3.5 miles tempo starting at 6:44 pace and averaging 6:27.

Thursday: 6.5 miles/57:45.

Friday: 4.5 miles/42:00 with Liz! 90 minutes of yoga with live music in the evening – not very strenuous but I adore live music!

Saturday: 4.8 miles/43:00. Felt exhausted. In addition to the rough sleep + job during the week, I also took a CPR class in the morning. Too much!

Sunday: 10.7 miles total, Columbus 10k in 38:53.

Total: 54 miles.

I'm a 20-year veteran of competitive running, USATF certified coach, mom of a toddler -- and still trying to set PRs. I write about training from 5k to marathon, motherhood and competitive running, and the elite side of the sport. The 5k is my favorite race (16:56 PR) but I've got a score to settle with the marathon.

  1. First, if JB has slept so well at < 4 months such that he can regress, you're doing great! Haha. Second, NICE job!!! I hear you on the endurance. My 5k fitness came back way before everything else after babies. You'll be back hitting PRs by the fall, I bet!

  2. Oh, yeah, his sleep is really not that bad, considering! And Patrick is off for the summer so I get a lot of help now.
And thanks! I really felt like I showed my current fitness. Super excited for fall races, especially if I can ramp up the miles soon…
