Catnip’s Training Log – 1.24.2016

Warming up with a hot beverage in my new mug!
Freezing cold week = lots of treadmill runs and lots of hot tea!

A day in the life:

I typically have a 7:30 am staff meeting on Tuesdays but it was canceled due to the long weekend which gave me time for an atypical morning run! I wake up at 6 and get on the treadmill at 6:20 with baby monitor and headphones. 30 minutes and a couple bathroom breaks later, I’ve completed 3.5 miles and am into the shower while JB starts wiggling around in his bed.

After dressing, I grab JB (who announced, “I not poop yet”), nurse him and then go through the usual play/dress/play cycle.

The windchill is in the negatives so we really bundle up for the walk to “baby school” where JB quickly gets to playing with trains. I hustle back home, finish dressing (I wear sweatpants until the last minute!), pack my lunch and drive to work, arriving by 8:30.

Many schools are closed due to the freezing temperatures, but I still have good attendance for speech therapy. Between kiddos, I eat lunch at my desk in spurts while completing documentation and emails. I finish at 5:30 and head home for dinner, playtime, and a looooong bedtime routine with JB.

Once he’s down, I eat a bit more myself, clean the kitchen one last time and hop on the treadmill around 8:30. After a mile warm-up, I bump up the pace to 6:40 (9.0 mph) and gradually increase. I feel comfortable until I hit 6:11 pace and after a minute or so bring it back down to 6:15 to finish 30 minutes at 6:28 average. I cooldown just a few minutes since it’s pretty late, do a quick rinse in the shower and bed by 10. I’m tired!

Monday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day so I was off work. Unfortunately, it was freezing cold outside so I decided to do my run on the treadmill. 13.3 miles @ 8:16 average pace with a few surges thrown in to keep things interesting. Ha.

Tuesday: 3.5 @ 8:36 in the morning, 6.2 @ 6:57 average in the evening including 30 minutes tempo with 6:28 average.

Wednesday: 8 miles @ 8:21 average, then 3.6 @ 8:30 in the evening.

Thursday: Just 6 @ 8:24 pace in the evening. Mentally tired of all the treadmilling! Haven’t run a step outside yet this week. In fact, I’ve spent maybe 10 minutes total outside for any purpose.

Friday: 8.8 @ 8:26. Treadmill again. 3.6 @ 8:29. Treadmill. Again.

Saturday: I RAN OUTSIDE! Completed 17.2 miles with 8:04 average and felt pretty good the whole way! Ate gels at the 30 minute and 77 minute marks.

Sunday: One of the worst runs ever! Felt great until I suddenly needed a restroom around 4 miles and then on and off the rest of the way. I was so relieved to see my car and planned on treating myself to something yummy on the way home but soon realized I lost my credit card and drivers license somewhere on the bike path. Ughhh. 10.2 miles @ 8:05 average.

total: 80.4 miles

I write about training from 5k to marathon, motherhood and competitive running, and the elite side of the sport. The 5k is my favorite race (16:56 PR) but I've got a score to settle with the marathon.

  1. I see you rock the double run days like nobody’s business! What race(s) are you currently training for?

Big bummer about the drivers license and credit card- done that one before, such a hassle.
