I went back to work this week but managed to keep the running momentum going, knocking out another 70+ miles. Unless otherwise noted, everything was on the treadmill and was pretty boring. Friday, however, I got to race a mile on the indoor track!
I haven’t run anything under 6 minute pace since my 5ks in November so I wasn’t sure what to expect. At the gun, 4 girls went out in front of me and another one passed shortly thereafter. I knew from the heat sheets that there were only a couple seeded under 5:50, so I expected to catch most of them but by the 3rd lap the pace was feeling really slow so I pulled around all of them on the backstretch.
From there, I had no idea what was going on with the college girls behind me. I also had no idea of my pace – the college didn’t have a clock set up and I didn’t start my watch. So I just ran hard and focused on passing people efficiently, since I had to lap others on the 200m track. I tried to pick up the pace in the last 400 and switching into kick mode in the last lap felt niiiiiiice. Final time was 5:35 and I won by 30 seconds.
The whole time, JB had been sitting with my parents, watching intently and smiling at me. I caught a “Run fat [fast] mama!” on one lap, even! But when I crossed the finish line and walked back over to them, he looked so confused. Annoyed, even! “Mama WALKING?” he asked, disapprovingly.
Monday: 8 miles @ 8:18 average
Tuesday: 3.1 @ 8:33 in the morning. 7.3 @ 7:07 overall average in the evening including 35 minutes averaging 6:36 pace. Can’t believe how little fitness I lost over my two week break.
Wednesday: 8.4 miles @ 8:35 average mid-day. 3.4 @ 8:44 after JB went to bed.
Thursday: 6.5 @ 8:32 pace.
Friday: 4.1 miles @ 8:11 pace after lunch. Cold, rainy, and I almost threw up my lunch. 5.3 in the evening including 1 mi race in 5:35 followed by 2 miles tempo around 6:30 average.
Saturday: 15 @ 8:26 average in perfect weather!
Sunday: 7.8 miles in cold rain that turned into the stabby kind of snow in the crazy wind gusts. Pretty miserable. Ran 3.5 on the treadmill in the evening @ 8:30 pace with a couple breaks to check on my quiche.
Total = 73 miles.
