Basil’s “Training” Log – 7.26.15

Nope. Still not taking the quotes off “training”. Or “running” for that matter. But I am putting one foot in front of another these days, to the tune of 14.5 weekly miles. I know it’s tough, but try not to be too jealous of my high mileage. I mean, we can’t ALL be ultra runners.

Speaking of ultra runners, how ’bout that CILANTRO? Wow! One huuuuundred miles! In one sitting! Or running, or whatever it is they do when they run for more than a whole freaking day! I’m so amazed by 100 straight miles. I’ve never done more than 55 in an entire week!

So the last I left you, I was having to switch surgeons mid-stream due to insurance issues. My new surgeon is highly competent and I’m very confident in his ability to fix my hip. He is, however, much more conservative than my previous surgeon. I was told by surgeon #1 that I could “return to sport” as early as 9 weeks. Surgeon #2 still has me in crutches at 5 weeks, and is thinking 6 months is a more reasonable timeline for return to running outside. While surgeon #2 is doing a better job at managing my expectations, I kind of want to egg his house right now. And maybe spray paint something along the lines “SIX EFFING MONTHS ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME!” on the lawn. But I’m not going to do that. Mostly because he would totally know it was me.

So surgery is scheduled for late September. Between now and then, I plan to enjoy every last minute of “running” I get. I don’t even care if the quotes are still on. Running is such a gift. I’m lucky to be able to still do it (albeit with some discomfort). And I’m lucky I have the option of surgery to keep running and training (someday) without the discomfort. I don’t take this fabulous gift even the least bit for granted. And if I have to wait six months to begin again, then so be it. (But–and I say this in my most Gargamel-ish voice– I’ll prove that surgeon wrong if it’s the last thing I ever doooooooo!!!)

So, here’s the post-stress-reaction return to running progress for the week:

Monday – 3.6 miles, run 15 minutes, walk 2, run 15 minutes

Tuesday – 3.6 miles, run 20, walk 2, run 10 minutes

Wednesday – off

Thursday – 3.5 miles, trail run with a friend. So fun to be out there with good company! One quick walk break in there, up a hill.

Friday – off, hiked a bit over 4 miles with the kids and some friends. Beautiful day!

Saturday – 3.8 miles, trail run with another great friend. Ran most of it, walked up a hill for a break. The trails are definitely easier on the hip.

Sunday – off. Helped my soccer-obsessed son with a hill workout. Worked with him on form, and noticed that the poor kid has inherited my wonky elbows-out arm swing. Sorry, buddy.

Total – 14.5 miles

Recovering corporate hamster-wheeler turned Alaskan hausfrau, mother of two and running enthusiast. Kind of a June Cleaver in tempo shorts...minus the makeup and vacuum. Will run to great lengths to get a moment of peace.

  1. Love your love for running, through thick and thin. Keep that fire kindled. I too am in awe of Cilantro’s 100 mile run!
