Barley’s Training Log 11.29.15

While I was relaxing in my heated seat on the car ride home from Philly Sunday, I was also chatting with Toffeeย via messenger. I have truly enjoyed following along with her progress as an athlete and I respect her knowledge and experience more than I can say. So when she asked me what was next(break time or continue with the PR momentum), I knew what my answer SHOULD be. I was riding the high of a PR that took place only hours prior, but also know that the cumulative effect of this fall was starting to get to me.

Between September 13 and November 22, I ran 2 marathons, 5 5k’s and 1 half marathon. Not to mention, I set a PR at each of those 3 distances during that time. While I feel great (I really do), I know that I can’t do this ALL of the time and expect to keep up with it. So this week seemed like the perfect time to NOT run. Recovering from a race, and far enough out from when Boston training will start that I don’t feel like it will hinder anything. I also had extra time off due to the holiday, which meant I could catch up on life a bit.

Monday: Work, Grocery Shopping, Monday Night Football

Tuesday: Work, asleep on couch with 2 dogs as blankets by….8 pm?

Wednesday: Work, errands, time with friends.

Thursday: Thanksgiving! Brian’s parents live on the course of a local, very large turkey trot. So instead of running it, I spent it drinking coffee at the end of the driveway and cheering for everyone. Did a bit of me wish I was running, of course. But, it was nice to relax and also put some importance on other priorities. We did walk 2 miles in the afternoon after dinner, so that was something.

Friday: Cleaned the house top to bottom

Saturday: Finally got the motivation to hit the gym. 30 minutes on the elliptical with max incline but low resistance to stretch out the hips. Finished with 15 minutes of high intensity strength training.

Sunday: Sleep, Football, more sleep. Oh, and being a little sore from the day before.

Week Totals: 2 mile walk, 30 minutes elliptical, 15 minutes strength training

Beers Drank: Guinness, Flaherty’s Irish Ale, Red Hook Winter Hook, Breckinridge Christmas Ale, Victory Winter Cheer, Genesee Salted Caramel Chocolate Porter, Blue Moon Gingerbread Spiced Ale

I laugh because a part of me thought that since I wasn’t running I would be at the gym more and motivated to cross and strength train. The reality was, I know I needed total rest because I didn’t have the motivation for much at all. I embraced the time off, ate whatever I wanted (which isn’t too different), and caught up on sleep. While there were times I wanted to run, there were plenty of other times that it wasn’t even a thought.

Looking forward to getting back into things this coming week though. I do better with routine so finding that again will be important. Time to base build and start thinking about a training plan again in a few weeks.
