Barley’s Training Log 1/8-1/14/18

On paper and in reality, this was a really good week for a few reasons. I’d say the biggest thing was that I got outside 4 DAY IN A ROW. This hasn’t happened since…October maybe? Many had strange weather this week all over the country, here in Upstate NY it meant experiencing multiple seasons in the week and even on one day. Wednesday and Thursday nights it was 50 degrees so I got outside in the evening after Hannah went to bed. There was rain with it, but still 100% worth it for the fresh air! I figured these two days would be my last outside for a week if not longer.

Well, then Friday rolled around and it was 60 during the day and dropped to below 30 by the time that I was on my way home from work. I decided to skip my treadmill progression and do a fartlek around the neighborhood before the storm rolled in. I was playing chicken with the weather but I was so glad I did it- solid miles in outside and a great workout (5:50 avg for 15 x 45 seconds….with wind and rain). During my cool-down I noticed the rain had turned to snow (temp had dropped drastically during the second half of the workout), and by the time I got back to the house I was SO glad to be safe and sound at home. The sleet was coming down good and everything was already crazy slippery.

Friday night I had trouble falling asleep so I read for a while, had some wine and finally got close to sleeping when Hannah cried a little. It startled me and even though she went right back down I couldn’t relax….until I fell asleep on her floor for 3 hours(this is kind of my go-to when my anxiety kicks up….in the spirit of transparency, my postpartum OCD/Anxiety are hit and miss lately but definitely still there). I finally crawled in bed around 4 something, and slept for a few more hours. With that said I knew it wouldn’t be the best idea to do my long that day as planned, and instead opted for a few recovery miles around the block late in the afternoon. The storm had brought over a foot of snow during the night/morning but the side streets were plowed decent enough and I didn’t feel like driving to the gym. It was the right call and then I was able to have a relaxing easy long run on the mill watching football playoffs on Sunday.

So this week was shifted around a bit, but in the end I got my highest mileage week in (since before Hannah) and was still able to get 2 workouts and a long run in. It feels good to be in a routine again and in a training but not training yet mentality (if that makes any sense). I am hoping to build a little more the next 2 weeks and then take a recovery week.
