Barley’s Boston ’16 Training Week 13

Whew, another week down and with this one ending I can finally say I’m in taper for Boston.

I had an entire post about this week and feel like it was beyond negative so I tried to change it up. Don’t get me wrong it was a tough week, my body and mind were still feeling the stress from last week. All week my stomach was sensitive, nausea was overwhelming, stress pimples were popping up, my back ached and sleep was minimal. But, the thing is that I got through it and things can always be worse.

The bad: I ran a lot less miles than planned, I attended a funeral for someone I loved dearly, ย andย Sunday I ran a half marathon in the worst conditions I have ever run in. Oh and Syracuse Men’s basketball lost Saturday night.

The silver linings of those: Yes 2 weeks in a row of lower miles isn’t ideal but the bulk of the training went so incredibly well, that some fresher legs leading up to Boston won’t be a bad thing. Yes I attended a funeral for an Aunt I loved dearly, but I got to spend all of Saturday with Brian and my family honoring her and reminiscing about life. That stupid half marathon wasn’t even a goal race, in fact it was supposed to be a marathon paced workout (didn’t happen), better to have a shittastic race 2 weeks before Boston then actually at Boston. I was so exhausted from the week, and the emotions of the funeral that I fell asleep for the second half of the Syracuse game and didn’t officially witness the loss.

The really good: I have amazing friends and family and a boyfriend who supports me like no other. I got a new car to replace mine that died last week, and now have a safe reliable and far nicer vehicle(that all wheel drive came in handy for Sunday’s snow storm). Also….my new nephew finally arrived(best for last!). Baby Max is tiny and adorable and was a great way to end the week.

Tuesday: 7 easy miles late evening outside
Wednesday: Easy 9ish miles after work
Thursday: 10.5 miles total w/3 atMP, 4 at T
Friday: Easy 9ish miles after work
Saturday: ย Unplanned Rest
Sunday: 15ish miles total w/ Syracuse Half marathon
Week Totals: 51.3 miles
Beers Drank: Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald, Southern Tier One Buffalo
Boston Training Mileage to date: 717.1 miles (55.16 avg. miles/week)

  1. You’re a hero for running a half marathon through hail and white out conditions! Almost anything Boston could throw at you will feel easy compared to that. And congrats on your nephew!

I saw your picture from that race and all I gotta say is hardcore… I wouldn’t even worry about not hitting the marathon pace as a workout, because running in that snow is more about mental toughness and you’ve got that down for the marathon. I’ve been thinking about you with your aunt passing away as well and am glad you’ve still managed to get your training runs in and lean on your boyfriend and family for support. Best wishes in the coming weeks before Boston!
