5 Things We Can Learn About Running from Pamela Anderson

Just like every year, New York Road Runners has released the names of celebrities who are planning to run the New York City Marathon, an impressive list that includes some great athletic personalities including Dean Karnazes, Olympic gold medal swimmer Summer Sanders, hockey champion Nick Kypreos, and Pamela Anderson.

Don’t laugh!  Pam Anderson is a famous runner!  After all, we’ve all seen the classic image of Pam Anderson running – running across the beach in a skimpy swimsuit, that is.  Heyooo.

Okay, I admit I snickered upon seeing the headline, but then I read an article in the NY Daily News that made me think twice.  Trust me, Pam has got this marathon thing in the bag, and we can all learn a thing or five from her!

1. Don’t be afraid to push against the fabric.  Pamela isn’t just some ditzy blonde with a hot body, she’s a woman who knows who she is and loves to challenge herself.  “You know, somehow I learned to dance, learned to skate, and all these things that people thought I couldn’t do. Now, I’m running a marathon,” says the 46-year-old, who has previously challenged herself athletically.  In 2010 she learned to dance for the first time for TV’s Dancing With the Stars, and just this year she learned to figure skate like a pro for the UK show Dancing on Ice.  If any non-running celebrity is up to a challenge like this one, it’s Pamela!

2. You can squeeze a lot into a tight…schedule. Celebrities often travel a lot, and it sounds like Pam is no exception. She says she’s been “running on the track, running on the beach, running different distances on different surfaces,” so it sounds like she and her trainer are really using her travel schedule to her advantage! Pam even ran while on vacation with her two sons.  Aww.

3. Clothes? Who needs ’em?  Or at least not fancy ones.  On race day our girl is keeping it simple, and instead of wasting time and money shopping for fancy new gear she’s going old-school.  “I walked into Lululemon, and just turned around and walked out….I have had the same pair of shorts and sneakers from 20 years ago. This is a whole new world. I’m just winging it with what I have.”

4. Run with plenty of support.  Pam’s brother Gerry is a runner himself, and he’s planning to pace her the whole way.  She’s 100% sure she’s going to make it to the finish line because he’ll be with her.  “My brother won’t let me stop,” she said.

5. Revealing yourself can be very motivating.  “I like to do things that people think maybe I can’t do, and this is definitely one of those things,” she said about the marathon.  Pamela may be a sex icon, but she’s unapologetic about it and totally aware of who she is.  And she is certainly not the type of woman to let other people limit her because of it.  And good for her!  Even for someone new to running, having that kind of take-no-prisoners attitude and believing in yourself can really help you make it the whole 26.2 miles!

  1. Hilarious and nice ‘punning’.

    I will be there, running alongside. I also will have on a pair of ‘sneakers’ as she says. Anybody who is willing to train and jump in the chute is worthy of respect, right?
