Comment of the Week – 11.2.12

This is what we Salties do when we read your awesome comments!

Phew! We made it to Friday! It’s been a crazy week in Saltyland. Salty, Pepper, Ginger and Coriander were almost blown away here in Northeast Ohio, while Cinnamon, of course, was dealing with the storm in NYC. We all made it through relatively unscathed and are very grateful! And despite our power and internet outages we managed to maintain the site. Go us!

In non-Sandy news, Sassafras is heading to Indiana for her fall goal race, the Monumental Marathon! After a great fall of training, girlfriend is ready to ROCK. IT. OUT. GOOOOOOOOOOOOO Sassy!!! Also, Salty friend Predawn Runner is offering free electronic editions of his book, Running Ahead of the Sun, here until Monday!

And now for the reason we’re all here. Our commenter of the week is …

Mary Lou! Mary Lou posted this great comment on Cinnamon’s The Show Must Go on Post that expressed her opinion that the NYC Marathon moving forward was the right decision under the circumstances:

I am one of the registered out-of-town runners on the fence, both philosophically and from a practical point of view. Television footage from Staten Island last night was heart-wrenching. Today, I will reassess train service into NYC and what it will take to revamp my transportation plans to and from start & finish. My sense is if this is a go, a totally flexible state of mind and willingness to deal with last minute changes, as well as a sense of humour will be in order. I’m preparing my mindset as I write this.

We love this comment because Mary Lou expresses the conflicted feelings that so many out-of-town NYC Marathon runners must be feeling. Mary Lou promises to update us on whether she actually heads into the city for the race and of course, if she does she’ll tell us all about it. Mary Lou, we’re with you no matter what you decide!

When Mary Lou isn’t posting great comments on Salty Running she maintains her own blog dedicated to all things senior running: She’s also the founder and race director for the Capitol 10 Miler – Run for the Arts in Harrisburg. (She tells me it’s flat, fast and scenic and set for early April 2013 – check it out!)

When we told her of her big win she had this to say:

This is a surprise and much appreciated.

I am a 65-year old runner who lives in Central Pennsylvania with my husband, where I am an active member of the Harrisburg Area Road Runners Club ( I have been running for about 35 years. I began running marathons in my mid-50s (P.R. 4:13).  I have since run 18 marathons, including 5 Bostons.
Favorite things along with family and friends are running, the outdoors, the arts, travel, and combining these interests/passions whenever possible.
Thanks – and love your blog.

Besides her blog, you can get more from Mary Lou by following her on twitter!

Thanks Mary Lou and best of luck this weekend no matter what you decide!!

  1. Good luck this weekend in whatever you decide (and whatever they ultimately do with the NYCM)!

Big thanks to Greg for the book offering. I just downloaded it and am looking forward to a good read.
