The Championship

Paula Radcliffe vs.ย Tirunesh Dibaba

Paula Radcliffe is the current world record holder with her 2:15:25. Besides being blazing fast, she gave all mother runners hope when she won the New York City Marathon justย monthsย after delivering her first child.

Below is video of the last mile or so of her first world record marathon, in 2002 in Chicago. What’s most amazing is how she finishes and is able to give an interview within seconds!

You might remember Tirunesh Dibaba from her breath-taking 10,000 meter gold medal performance during the 2012 London Olympics. She also won both the 10,000 and 5,000 meter golds in the 2008 Olympics. In addition to that, she is the current 5,000 meter world record holder. She took the record from fellow contender, Meseret Defar, with her amazing 14:11.15 run in 2008. She also holds the 15k road record. Sheโ€™s won several world championships in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

Below is the video of the 2012 Olympic 10,000m race where she won gold. Note the smile at 23:38 that foreshadows the last 500 meters!

  1. PAULA! Ha, thanks for posting the videos! And to think that she went ahead and broke her own record by another minute and a half or so! Love how Wejo was left in the dust. I think she could be the greatest runner and maybe Dibaba, the greatest racer? Now, I will say that with Dibaba attempting the marathon soon that things will get mighty interesting…

  2. I can’t wait to see what Dibaba does in the marathon! She is just amazing to me. She can drop a sub-60 lap at the end of her 10ks. It’s sick! She really is a “Baby Faced Assassin!” :) I love Paula too, but Dibaba is like running perfection to me!
