I was a mother for five and a half years before I became a runner. I survived colic, various illnesses, one round of potty training, daycare, preschool and Kindergarten before I started running. I’ve got a freshman in high school now (how did that happen?) and when I look back over their childhoods – please not over yet! – I see that being a mother-runner, or a mother who runs, is something that develops in stages.

Young Runners at the Top, by Brad Hudson, Lize Brittin, and Kevin Beck, is a comprehensive training guide aimed at coaches, parents, and kids. It tells you all the basics and practical details you need to know about training plans, strength training, gear, nutrition, injuries, and cross training.
The focus is on helping kids build a sustainable, healthy running career by having fun and finding rewards in the process regardless of their ability level. Its overarching theme, though, and what makes it stand out from other training guides, is its insistence on guiding runners to a strong sense of self, of learning their needs and personal boundaries and what’s healthy for them. It doesn’t feel this way during those years, but when our kids are babies running is easy. You can put them in a stroller and go. When they go to school running is easy because, well, they’re in school! Before they’re old enough to stay home alone for an hour, finding time to run when school-aged kids are home for the summer can be quite a challenge. The good news is that it’s not impossible.
