Recently I revisited my unreal food post from 2012, kvetching a little about the carrying of real food while on the run and going on to discuss the real foods I’ve tried carrying and the pros and cons of different options. Afterward I got an email from my sister (Salty), about a book she saw, called Feed Zone Portables, A Cookbook of On-The-Go Food for Athletes. I immediately nabbed a copy and tore through it in just a couple of days. It taught me that I can cut nearly any food into pieces and smash it into balls of sticky rice. Freaking genius, these guys are.
What follows is a review of the book and a recipe for “Strawberry Shortcake Rice Cakes” that I adapted from the principles outlined within. Be impressed, ’cause I’m a New Yorker with a small apartment kitchen and a preference for ordering takeout! But moreover be impressed because this isn’t just a cookbook, it’s a book that teaches you how to see race fuel in a whole new way.
