Guys! Think Qualifying for Boston is Easier As A Woman? Try It!

Guys! Think Qualifying for Boston is Easier As A Woman? Try It!

Hey, runner man! The new Boston Marathon qualifying standards are out, and yep, the little ladies still have to run way less fast than you do in order to get in. Are you sick and tired of women always having it easier? Have you joked about running a marathon in drag just to qualify for Boston the easy way?

Cool. You do you! (Just make your disguise really good, ok? Otherwise the online vigilantes may be onto you.)

Now before you can plan your BQ party extravaganza, hang on a sec. Because if you truly want to BQ like a woman, you can’t get away with just slapping on a wig and some makeup. There are substances that you might have an inkling exist in women’s bodies, substances that majorly affect our running as we cruise to that oh-so-easy BQ. That’s right: hormones.

Hormones from hell.

Yep, join us for a quick trip back to sixth-grade health class as we learn how you can really, truly qualify for Boston like a girl. Read more >>

Migraines and Running: Yep, It’s A Thing.

Migraines and Running: Yep, It’s A Thing.

migrainesCutting off my own head is not something I normally fantasize about, but last week in the grip of a migraine, decapitation seemed like the only logical way forward. It has been about a year since my last migraine and last week I had two. I hope it’s not going to become a trend.

This throbbing, intense, one-sided pain behind one eye is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme fatigue. When I have one I can’t do anything other than lie in bed for the rest of the day, and there is an intense hangover-feeling the next morning. And it always comes on during or immediately after a run: exercise-induced migraine. Read more >>

Reader’s Roundtable: Does Running REALLY Help with PMS?

Reader’s Roundtable: Does Running REALLY Help with PMS?

Molasses Posted by Molasses on November 16, 2015 10 Comments

imageOhhhhh LAAAAAAAA-DEEEEEEZ!  It’s that time again, time for another edition of Salty Running’s famous Reader’s Roundtable!

Now why does it sound like I’ve taken the train to Crazy Town?  Well, like me, sometime within the next month you too may be able to bask in the glory of your womanhood by forcing tightly packed rolls of cotton into unspeakable places. So pack your bags and let’s all go a little nuts together, because Aunt Flo’s on her way!

Every woman feels differently in the magical days leading up to THE CURSE.  Perhaps she experiences Psychotic Mood Shifts, Pass More Sweets, Pardon My Sobbing, Pissy Mood Syndrome, or the more generically familiar PMS. Scientists insist that exercise (like running) helps ease PMS symptoms, like bloating, cramping and achy muscles.  But what about a demonic attitude? Theoretically, running may help us re-center.

Before running:

  • everyone-in-the-whole-world-is-taking-advantage-of-me!
  • can’t-they-see-how-hard-we-work?
  • why-wont-they-just-offer-to-goddamn-help-once-in-awhile?
  • seriously-do-you-have-to-keep-making-that-noise?

After running:

  • golly-I-am-so-lucky-to-have-the-best-husband ever.
  • I-love-everybody!
  • I’ve-really-been-a-bitch and I-feel-so-guilty-now.
  • I’m-not-mad-I’m-just-going-to-cry-and-apologize-and-hug-everybody.

So I wanted to ask YOU!

Tell us all about running and your PMS experiences! Does running help your pre-period mood swings, bad attitude or the SADZ? Does running help your physical symptoms too?
