Take Your Rest Day, Gertrude.

Take Your Rest Day, Gertrude.

Fennel Posted by Fennel on April 25, 2017 9 Comments

see ya later. Gotta run.

I can’t tell you the last time I had a rest day. And I mean, a true day of rest with zero exercise or anything that gets my heart pumping. Bertha and her litany of excuses is not my problem. I’ve trained myself to ignore Bertha as I get out of bed without hitting snooze, throw my gear on and hit the road without a second thought. Instead, my problem is Gertrude.

I bet you’ve met her. Gertrude is the voice that fills your head with guilt if you don’t run. It doesn’t matter how full your schedule is, how foul the weather, how much pain you’re in, or even if your schedule tells you not to run, Gertrude tells you you’re a wuss.  Read more >>

The Middle of Marathon Training Guilt

The Middle of Marathon Training Guilt

Pumpkin Posted by Pumpkin on March 9, 2016 9 Comments

imageIf you’re anything like me, the beginning of March means you are now well into your spring marathon training cycle. If you’re anything like me, you’re also beginning to experience those nagging feelings that start to intensify when you’re in the middle of a marathon training cycle.

For once, I’m not referring to nagging feelings of injury; all is smooth sailing on the injury front. [*knocks vigorously on wood*] What’s really starting to eat at me right now is Guilt, yes, with a capital G. Early in the training cycle, it was a faint whisper, but with each passing week the nagging internal monologue grows louder:

Your running is selfish!

Your running is annoying to everyone, especially your family!

You’d be a better mom/wife/employee/friend if you weren’t taking so much time to RUN.

As runners, we are faced with scheduling conflicts and compromise. Sometimes running is inconvenient, and it doesn’t always just inconvenience us. Running can be a huge pain in the butt for everyone who relies on us too. Read more >>

On “Having It All”

On “Having It All”

A toddler girl crying
It’s hard to leave for a run when this blocks the door. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

We were two hours into NBC’s coverage of the Olympics when my 9 year old observed, “They spend more time trying to get your emotions up than they do showing sports!” Word. And normally, this over-the-top repackaging of sport as story annoys me to no end. But when they highlighted how mother and recent silver medalist Noel Pikus-Pace toggled between late night skeleton training and early morning toddler duty, I turned into a total sap. Ate. It. Up.

I particularly liked the exchange between Noel and her oldest, six year old Lacee, in the hours before her final two runs.

“You’ll remember this the rest of your life,” said the Olympian to her daughter, referring to the momentous event her little girl would witness that day.

“What’s for lunch?” replied the first grader.

In spite of having just two hours per day to train — complete with interruptions from poopy diapers and needy toddlers –Pikus-Pace went on to win a silver medal that day. What Lacee had for lunch remains undisclosed.

Their conversation struck a familiar chord, one you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to understand. In short — no matter how grand and exciting our goals and achievements might be, our children are mostly just wondering about chicken nuggets. Noel’s inspiring story got me thinking about the challenges we face as women in pursuing our personal goals in the midst of raising young kids and/or maintaining a career. Finding time to train and balancing it all with the needs of family in mind is so much easier said than done. Read more >>

Running from Guilt to Gratitude

Running from Guilt to Gratitude

Molasses Posted by Molasses on January 9, 2014 2 Comments

someecards.com - Yes, I'm helping you put together a 3-D map of the Rocky Mountains, but all I'm really thinking about is what it would be like to go running there.I consider running to be a healthy distraction, and I like to run while my kids are at soccer practice so that they don’t feel like I’m asking them to work hard for an hour while I sit around in a lawn chair sipping soda pop and cheering them on. I want them to see me working my body, so that they know even when you’re “old” it’s important to keep moving. And, maybe, I want to inspire them just a little bit, and make them proud of me. But, if I’m running and it’s not during soccer practice, I feel a healthy dose of mommy guilt for taking time away from them. Maybe it’s runner’s guilt. Either way – it feels bad, like I’m doing something entirely selfish instead of whatever I should be doing for my family.

Lately I find myself wondering, does any woman run without this kind of guilt?
