Barberry’s Blissful First Trimester Running Experience

Barberry’s Blissful First Trimester Running Experience

Barberry Posted by Barberry on November 1, 2018 Leave a comment

Okay, maybe the word “blissful” is not the best way to describe how I felt running in the earliest weeks of my pregnancy. In fact, I fluctuated between joy and pure anxiety about my lack of control over my body. This is my first pregnancy, so I have no prior experiences to compare with the way I feel right now.

I didn’t have the worst first trimester experience, but I definitely was not experiencing that pregnancy glow. In fact, I wanted to punch anyone who told me pregnancy was a beautiful thing, a feeling I attribute to the hormone surges. A lot of changes were going on in my body, and it definitely changed my running routines, as well. I had good runs and not-so-good runs.  Slower paces and more frequent walk breaks became the norm.

It wasn’t easy adjusting to this change. Running has always been my stress relief, my therapy. When it felt like it became much more difficult, it was frustrating. Being pregnant has already made many things more difficult; why does my running have to be so hard, too?

So here it is, in all of its glory … my experiences running in the first trimester!

My Running and Pregnancy Experience: First 20 Weeks

My Running and Pregnancy Experience: First 20 Weeks

Turmeric Posted by Turmeric on February 27, 2017 3 Comments

Well, here I am, already halfway through this pregnancy. I remember when I first discovered I was pregnant, I frantically googled and researched “pregnancy” to learn all the things I should expect. I was trying to figure out how other women felt at different points in their pregnancies so I could compare that to how I felt. I wanted to know everything. Was my belly showing more than normal? When should I start wearing maternity pants? When would my boobs stop hurting?

Looking back, I was nervous and wanted some reassurance, and I devoured Salty’s What to Expect From Running series. But, knowing how much I enjoy reading about other expectant mom’s experiences, I thought I’d add a footnote to Salty’s more general posts about running and pregnancy, to add a little more context.  Read more >>

Barley’s Training & Life April-June

Barley’s Training & Life April-June

Barley Posted by Barley on June 21, 2016 13 Comments

I figured it was time I catch up over here on training logs. Where I left off was heading into taper before Boston, which was clearly a while ago! A lot has happened since then, truly a roller coaster of very high and very low’s.

Boston Taper/Race Week

Monday: Norovirus- sick in bed

Tuesday: Norovirus- sick in bed

Wednesday: Norovirus- sick in bed, evening pregnancy test

Thursday: Easy 3ish miles

Friday: 5ish mile track fartlek to shake out legs after the week

Saturday: 3 treadmill recovery miles

Sunday: 3 easy miles + Strides

Monday: Boston, 5 weeks pregnant

Race week started with me in intense pain, and going to the doctor….clearly not ideal. At first they thought it was my gall bladder but turns out it was just a really bad case of Norovirus (stomach flu) going around. So I spent a few days in bed and tried not to freak out about running a marathon a few days later. Wednesday night though, Brian and I also found out that we were expecting our first child. This oddly, had nothing to do with norovirus and was just really bad timing to get sick. But that happy news was honestly going to outweigh anything that happened or was happening at the time.

Once the dust settled a bit, things just made so much more sense. I struggled the last few weeks before Boston with lack of motivation, easy runs were a little more effort than normal and workouts just didn’t have that zing to them. When it came time to think about the race itself, I knew I would give it a shot but didn’t have many feelings either way on how it would go. I wanted to try and I hoped to finish but at the end of the day, it didn’t matter.20160417_162318 (1)

How did Boston go? Well the short of it is, I gave it a shot for the first half  and then pulled the plug after that and just ran (much slower, including walks and pee breaks) to the finish. I ran a 3:16 marathon after spending months training for a 2:55, and I truly have no regrets. I ran 17 minutes slower in the second half than the first, and after the final step across the finish line I didn’t run for more than 30 days. I also spent that time incredibly happy, and hopeful.

Brian and I obviously weren’t broadcasting the baby news after Boston, it was still so early even though we wanted to tell anyone who would listen. The risk of miscarriage in the first trimester is higher, even without any complications I had in the past. So when people were asking why I wasn’t running after , or when people were prying for more information about my slower Boston time- it made for a tricky spot to be in. I told some people the truth, and others I just brushed it off with saying I was taking a break. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that both were true. I was pregnant, but I also was taking a much needed break.

Boston Recovery

Week 1: Nothing, nada, zilch

Week 2: 1 walk (3 miles)

Week 3: 2 walks (6 miles total)

Week 4: 1 walk (3 miles)

Week 5: 1 walk (3 miles), 1 easy run (2.5 miles)

Week 6: 3 walks (9 miles total)

In the end, things didn’t work out the way we hoped. At 12 weeks we found out we weren’t going to be parents anymore, and at 13 weeks said goodbye. There are few words I can use to describe the emotions we are going through together, but the big thing is we have each other. We also have awesome friends/family, including the Salty family who are incredibly supportive and helpful. I could write 1305927351 words on everything right now, but it will all come out eventually. In the mean time, we are wading through the emotions and working to find a routine (and way back to running). I won’t call it a comeback though, because that doesn’t feel right. I guess we will just call it a new beginning.

Yep! I’ve got one of these! (Photo credit: chippenziedeutch)

The past 13 weeks have been markedly out-of-character for me. I’ve been sleeping a lot and skimping on the running.  I’ve been taking long, drawn-out, three-hour naps (whenever I can and wishing I could be whenever I can’t). I’ve eaten more Kentucky Fried Chicken mashed potatoes with extra salt and drank more V-8 juice than I ever thought possible. I haven’t made it through a single night’s sleep without having to get up and pee at least two times. I gag when I brush my teeth, I dry heave at the smell of my hubby’s cologne, and cleaning the bathrooms and kitty litter have become off limits. I’ve been moody and my boobs have grown about 2 cup sizes (you think I’m kidding!?!), making my current stock of sports bras out-of-commission.

We’ve finally made it “Facebook Official” and I thought it was about time to share the news with those out in Salty Land. Baby Ginkgo is due July 9, 2014! Read more >>

1st Trimester: What to Expect from Running When You’re Expecting

1st Trimester: What to Expect from Running When You’re Expecting

What to expect from running when you're expecting
Jeff Forman/JForman@News-Herald.com

As I write this I’m just weeks away from delivering my third child. I’ve run through all of my pregnancies to varying degrees and because I know how hard it can be to find reliable information on running while pregnant I want to share with you what I’ve learned over the 26 months of my pregnancies.

So today I bring you the first of three installments of my guide to running while pregnant. This post chronicles the first trimester and tells you what you might experience with your running during that period.

Because every woman’s pregnancy experience is different, I know I can’t cover everything and might miss something important to you. I encourage you to ask questions and offer suggestions for other topics to cover. And as always, if you experienced something different or disagree let us know that too!

Now on to The First Trimester!

Live From My Bed

Live From My Bed

Salty Posted by Salty on April 19, 2012 3 Comments

Live action shot.

Hi. I’m typing in bed. I’ve just returned from my morning puke. It’s hard typing in bed, so excuse any typos. Normally, I’m up before my kids and hacking away with my coffee. But not these days. Baby number 3 has different plans.

I’m in the depths of the first trimester. I am enjoying such awesome delights as constant nausea with occasional marathon puking session a lá this morning, unending fatigue, constipation like I never ever have, all made complete by my oh-so-pleasant irritability. As a SAHM, I’m not doing a very good job. I am barely getting through the day. So, as you can imagine, running isn’t a top priority right now. That little pee-on-the-stick thing really changes everything!

But I am still running. Read more >>

The First Trimester Yuck

The First Trimester Yuck

Salty Posted by Salty on April 13, 2012 2 Comments

My sexy nighttime companion.

Cinnamon and Pepper are going to be taking over the Friday 5 today before Pepper heads out to Boston. Rock it, Pepper! I just didn’t have the energy to do anything other than wallow in my first trimester yucko feeling. I don’t know about you, but during the first trimester of all my pregnancies all I want to do is hibernate. I am exhausted and nauseous at all times. I have a box of cereal on my nightstand to snack on in the middle of the night so I don’t wake up puking. My husband makes fun of my snacking in bed. Hot! Read more >>
