Women Runtrepreneurs — Meet Charmaine Donaldson of Run Amok

Women Runtrepreneurs — Meet Charmaine Donaldson of Run Amok

Mango Posted by Mango on June 27, 2017 Leave a comment

Charmaine Donaldson is a woman of many talents: originally trained as a vet, she wrangles a veritable menagerie, makes dance, skating and gymnastics costumes, bakes astonishing cakes, has raised three grown sons, has a cheeky sense of humor, and runs, of course. But it’s her activewear business, Run Amok, that’s been her focus for the past two years.

The Queensland, Australia sport costume designer made herself a few pairs of running tights, people started asking where she got them, and ta-da! Run Amok was born. Since then, Run Amok has built a modest online presence on its website and Instagram and been picked up by the Intraining running stores in Brisbane.

In this interview, Charmaine tells us how running helped her smile through some difficult life challenges and gain the confidence to do big scary things, and how she hopes a pair of bright, bold high-performance tights can help other runners do the same. Read more >>

Women Runtrepreneurs: Julia Webb of Elite OnSite

Women Runtrepreneurs: Julia Webb of Elite OnSite

Ginger Posted by Ginger on June 21, 2017 Leave a comment

This isn’t the first time we’ve talked with Julia Webb. You may remember reading about her here when she was chasing and breaking world records for stroller runs. Since then, she had another child and is now mom to daughters Joanie (4) and Paula (1), added the half marathon to her list of stroller world records (1:22:57), and is now the CEO of Elite OnSite Fleet Services. Despite a name that might suggest the business is running related, it’s not — it’s a truck repair business!

However, just because van and truck repair aren’t runnery, doesn’t mean Elite OnSite isn’t flavored with the favorite pastime of both Julia and her American Record Holder husband, Alan Webb. In fact, you might catch Alan signing posters to give out to customers on Julia’s Instagram stories.

Julia started the small business together with Alan and they’re both excited to see it succeed. We decided to check in with Julia, not only to see how she’s doing since we last spoke, but also to get a peek into the life of a very different kind of runtrepreneur than the ones we’ve featured so far.  Read more >>

Women Runtrepreneurs: Carrie Tollefson of C Tolle Run

Women Runtrepreneurs: Carrie Tollefson of C Tolle Run

As a Minnesota native, I have always had a special interest in fellow Minnesotan Carrie Tollefson’s career. After a stellar collegiate running career at Villanova, she represented the 2004 U.S. Olympic team in Athens, competing in the 1500m.

Since then, Carrie has been busy as an ESPN2 analyst as well as a commentator for high profile races such as the NYC Marathon and last year’s Olympic Marathon Trials. More importantly, Carrie hosts a popular web series C Tolle Run along with a weekly podcast. Recent interviewees include Shalane Flanagan, Emma Coburn, and Gabe Grunewald. I admit I’m a huge fan and there’s nothing more motivating to me than listening to Carrie’s interviews out on the run.

Carrie also dedicates a lot of her time to encouraging the next generation of runners. Every summer, Carrie hosts a four-day competitive training camp for boys and girls in grades 7-12. In February of this year, Carrie was awarded a special merit award at National Girls and Women in Sports Day Minnesota. This award is given to individuals who are highly committed to breaking barriers for girls and women in sport.

I was excited to get the chance to chat with her about her running, the status of women’s race coverage, her goals, and of course all things Minnesota!

Women Runtrepreneurs: Jill Deering of rabbit

Jill Deering out for a run in one of her favorite rabbit outfits.

Recently, I discovered rabbit. A friend of mine was gushing about the brand’s running apparel and its co-founder, Jill Deering. Another running apparel brand? But I took a look for myself, and I decided that I had to talk to her.

The company kicked of its KickStarter campaign in 2015 and has grown tremendously since. They have products in running specialty stores across the country and launched an ambassador program along with a team of sponsored elites.

Jill was gracious enough to take some time out of her very busy schedule — besides working on rabbit, she’s a lawyer and competitive marathoner — to share her runtrepreneur experience with me and you!

Women Runtrepreneurs: Sarah of Sarah Marie Design Studio

Chicory Posted by Chicory on March 9, 2017 3 Comments

A little more than a year ago I came across an Instagram post of a shirt I had to have. I tracked it down, placed an order, and received personalized service from the designer, making sure I got the right size. At the time, Sarah Marie Design Studio only had a few products.

In the year since, Sarah FitzPatrick Clancy’s business has exploded. She’s added ambassadors, including me, has collaborated with the Rabbit brand of running apparel, and her designs are available in local running stores around the country.

Sarah took time to talk to me about being a “runtreprenuer” … right around the time she gave birth to her second child!

Women Runtrepreneurs: Joann of Fun Run Box

Salty Posted by Salty on February 23, 2017 1 Comment

Whether you’re interested in starting your own running business, or just looking for a little inspiration or a good story, we’re excited to kick off our new feature where we’ll be featuring a new #runtrepreneur and her company each week. Up first is Joann Pavlovcak of Fun Run Box!

In the interest of full disclosure, Joann Pavlovcak’s old treadmill is in my basement. We’re old friends and used to run together, but when I was pregnant with my oldest child, Joann, a tech wizardress by trade, moved from Cleveland to San Francisco for a job and needed to downsize, so I bought her treadmill and still use it frequently!
