5 Types of “Runners” You’ll Meet Online Dating

5 Types of “Runners” You’ll Meet Online Dating

Valentine’s Day! First it was a celebration for a bunch of saints named Valentine (seriously, there were three of them), and then Chaucer had to go and write a drippy poem connecting the saints’ day with lovers, and then came the flowers, chocolate, chintzy cards …

and Tinder?

Maybe ol’ Valentine of Rome and Chaucer didn’t see that one coming, but for many a single lady, online dating is all the romance she’s going to get on Valentine’s Day. I oughtta know. I used to be there.

Although on this Valentine’s Day,  I’ll be happily celebrating with my soon-to-be husband and, like many couples you’ll see out and about, we met online. (It actually works! Keep the faith!) But before my endurance-sports-loving Valentine and I deleted our Tinder profiles and made it official, I came across a lot of duds. Of course, because being active was a must for me, I focused my search on endurance athletes. So when I say I came across a lot of duds, I specifically mean I encountered a ton of runner duds, all of whom fit into one of five categories.

If you’re just starting out in the wonderful (and not-so-wonderful) world of online dating, here’s the five types of “runners” to watch out for. (The quotation marks there will make sense shortly.) Read more >>

Readers Roundtable: Do Runners Make Good or Bad Partners?

Readers Roundtable: Do Runners Make Good or Bad Partners?

Cinnamon Posted by Cinnamon on February 13, 2017 16 Comments

Cinnamon's picture on the dartboardWelp, I did it again. I broke up with the dude I was dating after just a few months. Why? When I explained that I didn’t want to go out late Saturday because of marathon training, he balked. “Can’t you just run later?”

Yeah, sure, I’ll just do that 14 miles by myself at the end of my day on the dark, icy streets I run all week instead of doing it in the morning with my sister and other friends on beautiful, wooded trails and enjoying the rest of my day without a two hour long run looming ahead. It’s okay, babe, sitting in a bar followed by a drunk sleepover in your dorm-room-furnished apartment with one pillow between us is worth it!

Or not.

But this begs the question, is it him or me? Are we runners being unreasonable by asking a partner to adjust his expectations of a good weekend to accommodate marathon training? Is it asking too much to say, “Sorry, you won’t be seeing me speed day, tempo day, long run day or the night before long run day. Oh, and when you do see me I’m going to eat more than you, need more sleep, probably not always smell great and mostly wear spandex.”

And it’s not just that I’m set in my single runner ways, I see this with my coupled friends. And whoa, when they have kids the demands are even bigger. Do we runners ask too much of our partners without giving enough in return? Are we giving up better relationships by prioritizing our training? Are our cries of health and mental well-being just lame excuses?

Do runners make bad partners, or good ones? How come?

Dear Non-Runner Who Wants to Date a Runner

Dear Non-Runner Who Wants to Date a Runner

Spearmint Posted by Spearmint on August 31, 2016 3 Comments

Ginger feels my pain.Dear non-runner who wants to date a runner,

I’ll admit it: running is a huge part of my life, much more important than you might understand. I feel very lucky that I have a family who supports me 110% and a group of best friends who cheer me on when I succeed and pick me up when I don’t. However, when it comes to dating, I’m open to dating you, but I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t run who really gets my running habit. In past relationships I have chosen to overlook that difference for fear of being too picky. One thing I’ve learned is that you, non-runner, need help, a lot of help, to be a good romantic partner for someone like me.

Non-runner, I’m here to help you. We runners are awesome people, but until you appreciate that, we will be leaving you in our dust. So, I’d like to offer you a little advice. [And runners, if you hear any of these things escape the lips of your non-runner boo, you might want to run away because it will only get worse. Yikes!]

Online Dating and Runners

Wouldn’t it be nice to find someone to grow old with? Flickr Commons image by Indiana Stan.

About a month or so ago, I found myself single again and a little cynical about dating, but needing to “put my life back together,” and get back out there. So Salty had really great timing when she sent out a message to us about Fitness Singles. Mostly about how she and her husband make fun of the ads (how can you not? They’re pretty easy to laugh at), but also seeing if anyone would be interested in trying it out and writing about it.

Naturally, I was a little nervous as to what types of men would be on there, but I figured it was better than the nothing I was getting from Tinder at the time. So after some back and forth with my fellow Salties, kpruns100s had a Fitness Singles profile. Read more >>

5 Reasons to Never Date a Runner

5 Reasons to Never Date a Runner

Cilantro Posted by Cilantro on February 15, 2013 7 Comments

Friday 5Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. In chilly Utah, we had a 5k advertised as a singles run. My running store hosted a Valentine’s Day Mix n’ Mingle for the unattached runner. Barf.

I didn’t go to the 5k and not just because I don’t run 5ks.  I didn’t head to the Mix n’ Mingle. And I said no to a perfectly nice runner who asked me out. Why?

I don’t date runners.

Don’t get me wrong. There are a slew of successful running relationships. It even works well for some.  But it’s rare. Better to be safe and NEVER date a runner. Read more >>

Four Shoes, One Love: How Training Changes Runners’ Relationships

Four Shoes, One Love: How Training Changes Runners’ Relationships

Rosemary Posted by Rosemary on October 15, 2012 12 Comments

I am no expert in relationships, but I am a competition-oriented runner in a relationship with another runner, and as the years go by and my husband and I go in and out of training cycles, I’ve noticed a few patterns.

The way I see it, the relationship dynamic between pair of runners depends greatly on where each runner is in her/his training.  It’s sort of like the states of matter: as the molecules of an object react to different temperatures, the object passes through the various states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, etc.).  Similarly, as the training of two runners increases and decreases in intensity, so will their relationship fluctuate through different states.
