Barley’s Post-Run Summer Beers

Barley’s Post-Run Summer Beers

Barley Posted by Barley on July 7, 2016

imageAs many know, I take my recovery pretty seriously. That also means I take my post-run beers pretty seriously, and no one can expect you to re-hydrate with the same beers year round. It’s summer, so put down stouts and porters and hopefully by now your local store stopped carrying my recommended holiday beers. No one likes the house with Christmas lights in July either. It’s time to stock up on the lighter side of seasonal beers.

As your resident beer girl, it’s my duty to fill you in on your best hydration practices for the summer. Although I did crowd source a bit, as I’m only one beer drinking woman. We call that being resourceful. It also helps to have friends who drink the beers you don’t like, so no craft pack goes to waste in the back of the fridge (IPA’s in the back of my Frigidaire, I’m looking at you). Read more >>

The Truth About Alcohol and Running

The Truth About Alcohol and Running

Pimento Posted by Pimento on March 8, 2016

imageDrinking and running. Many runners enjoy alcohol, after all, there are a lot of carbs in beer and what calls for a celebratory drink more than a race well run? We’re even known to occasionally drink in the middle of a run or a race. With a name like Pimento, you’d be correct in picturing me with my favorite Bloody Mary brimming with green olives after a 20-miler.

We might like to keep our heads in the sand because that craft porter in our fridge is calling our name, but the reality is alcohol is doing your training no favors. We runners are dedicated, resilient, and committed. We pour hours into working out and chasing our goals, yet we often pour on the alcohol. We can cling to the red wine is good for you! studies and rationalize that, as performance-focused runners we’re so healthy we’re immune to alcohol’s deleterious effects, but what if all that rationalizing is just that: rationalizing? 5 Holiday Beers for Post-Run Recovery

5 Holiday Beers for Post-Run Recovery

Barley Posted by Barley on December 4, 2015

fri5holbeerHappy Friday! Barley here to talk about something very important to training; BEER RECOVERY! We all know that hard training is nothing without the proper recovery tools. During the holidays it is easy to overindulge in all sorts of treats, but I’m here to remind you that some treats can actually HELP you!

During runs in the sweltering summer heat I don’t know about you, but I dream of drinking a cold brew while chattering away in an ice bath. After a cold winter run, you’re probably tempted to grab a hot coffee to get rid of those chattering teeth, but I have something even better to stop your shivers … Holiday beers! Read more >>

Readers’ Roundtable: Do You Drink Alcohol During A Training Cycle?

Readers’ Roundtable: Do You Drink Alcohol During A Training Cycle?

Cinnamon Posted by Cinnamon on September 14, 2015

Hasher passed out in the wild. Note the nearly empty beer, the tall socks, the generally poor choice of habitat...
It’s tough to combine drinking with running!

Well I’ve done it again, guys. Saturday night was the wrap party for my last movie job and, well, I went a little overboard at the open bar. The consequences of my whiskey consumption included dancing until way too late (with a Prince impersonator!), making an ass out of myself in front of people who may or may not still be my friends, crying through three pounds of eyeliner on the Subway while trying to justify my awful behavior, and a hangover that made my 16 miler look completely impossible.

It was…fun? Sorta?  Ehhh…

I knew I had that 16 mile run on deck Sunday, but I got caught up in the party anyway and just plain got out of control.  And even if we don’t get hammered, drinking can lead to late nights and sluggish mornings.  It begs the question, wouldn’t it just be easier to give up drinking during the training cycle?

So I want to hear from you, Salties!  Do you drink alcohol while you’re training, or do you abstain or cut back?  And if you abstain, how do you handle social drinking situations?
