Salty’s Training Log – 8.28.16

It’s about two months now since I’ve been running again, since my mono break. I had the longest fartlek I’ve had in a long time, weathered a cold, and did a fourteen miler in the heat and humidity and felt good! I haven’t been using a GPS watch at all, so I only have a little evidence here and there about my paces these days, but I’m definitely still slower than I was before mono. I think on paper we think, oh … I can come back from a six week break and definitely be where I left off within two months.ย But, reality can be harsh!

It’s ok though. I am feeling good, and I managed a cold fine, balancing rest and activity to not only not run myself down, but recover quickly. I have a 5k in three weeks and my A goal is to beat my time from last year. This may be a stretch with the whole mono thing, but I have been doing a little speed work over the last two months and I did none leading up to the race last year and I similarly went into it after takingย the month of June off of running to recover from overtraining. So, we’ll see. I think it’s a good goal. My B goal is to race-race whatever that means for me in my current state – no judgments!

On Saturday, I took my girls to see the North girls race. While I talked to one of the girls, my youngest was clearly unamused! Ha!

Mon: off

Tue: 7 easy with the stroller

Wed: 8 with a fartlek: 10 x 2:00/2:00

Thu: My legs were feeling a little rough and my cold started so did 6 miles of ellipticaling at the gym in 55 minutes.

Fri: 7 with Cinnamon and the stroller! So glad to have good company.

Sat: off (went to the North xc meet and coached soccer among other exciting things with my sinus headache – call the wambulance!)

Sun: 14 with my husband. I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up, but he ended up not being able to keep up with me – oops! First half right around 9:00 pace and second have in the 8:30s. I’ll take it. Started at 9:15 and it was humid, sunny, and in the 80’s. Was so thirst when we were finished, I got angry when a red light stopped us before the gas station where I was intent on purchasing some cold gatorade. I coined my emotion: “thangsty”.

Total: 42 (if counting the 6 elliptical “miles”).

Salty Running boss and mother of 3 little ones with PRs of 3:10:15 (26.2), 1:25:59 (13.1) and 18:15 (5k). I love to write about running culture, mental training, and fitting in a serious running habit with the rest of a busy life.
