Salty’s Training Log – 6.8.14

Nothing like having to put your new philosophies into practice. Just as I finished my most recent post, I found myself completely unable to meet my goals in a workout. Like no matter how hard I pushed, I was running through quicksand (slowly). In the past, I would have quit for sure. But I didn’t and for that I am immensely proud of myself.

I wasn’t sure what was causing me to feel like total garbage. Was it the crazy week prior, during which I slept like crap and ate about as well? Do I need a blood panel done? The next morning, a few days before I expected it, I got my period. I’m guessing that explains it. I had an ok tempo and a good-feeling long run, so I’m just going to see how the next week or so pans out before worrying something more systemic is at work (or that I’m just hopelessly more out of shape than I thought).

But seriously, just doing my best with what I have to work with is my new thing and I’ll tell you, it’s hard to feel bad about tough workouts or races when you’ve given it your best. Sure, I’m mortified my splits were so slow, especially because I did work hard! But it’s where I was at that point in time and that’s ok. It will get better. I just need to keep plugging along. It’s nice to finally be growing up.

And then I go home to this and suddenly all bad workouts mean diddly.

Mon: 8 early and easy with no watch.

Tue: a.m. 2.25 on the treadmill during swim class around 8:30 pace. p.m. 10.25 with track. 3 x mile @ 5k (3:00 rest) followed by 600, 400, 300, 200 @ a lot faster. Miles were 6:05, 6:15, 6:14. Hellacious. Could. Not. Go. The fast stuff felt way harder than usual, but I busted my butt as hard as I could and managed: 2:08, 85, 1:03 and 39 all with a 400 jog in between.

Wed: 5.25 elliptical during another swim class. Ran out of time for more. Legs are feeling good, but honestly rather elliptical than slog on the treadmill on a recovery day.

Thu: 8 early with 5 x :20 strides and no watch (I count foot strikes for my strides – nerd!)

Fri: 9 with tempo. Woke up at 4:45 a.m. and was running by 5:25. Drove to a neighborhood of low-traffic streets. It’s a little hilly and I have the hardest time hitting paces on the loop I usually do, so for the last three I scooted over a few streets and managed to hit the last two splits. Goal: 6:50, 6:50, 6:40, 6:30, 6:20. Actual: 6:58, 6:51, 6:53, 6:30, 6:21.

Sat:8.25 on trails. Perfect morning run all around!

Sun: 14 with Kelsi. We ran 7 miles out and back. Last 2 miles were 7:06 and 6:48 for 7:27 average pace and it felt good!

Total: 5.25 elliptical and 59.75 run.

Salty Running boss and mother of 3 little ones with PRs of 3:10:15 (26.2), 1:25:59 (13.1) and 18:15 (5k). I love to write about running culture, mental training, and fitting in a serious running habit with the rest of a busy life.
