Salty’s Training Log – 2.16.14

I’m getting this one in before I have to double up my logs – again. In my defense, it’s been a crazy week. We had a death in the family (my stepfather’s dad), so I was pretty tied up with that and then exhausted from it all to boot. It was sad and hard, but also nice to see how loved he was. Needless to say, many normal things, like training logs, got put on the back burner.

Anyway, last week was my last week “dicking around.” ย When I say dicking around, I mean, not training-training. ย The short story is that I was in a lot of pain after I started training this summer and ended up deciding to back off from training around the end of August. After working with an orthopedist, I was convinced I needed more time for my body to heal after the birth of my third child in December of 2012. But by her first birthday and still dealing with the same issues after cutting my mileage and laying off the speed for several months, I saw a physical therapist who found my problem: I have separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). I was experiencing back pain because my abs were essentially broken and non-functioning and my back was picking up all the slack.

I’ve been working with this physical therapist for a couple of months and doing much better. I backed off my mileage a lot over December and since the new year, I’ve been slowly building back up. I’m back to consistently running 6 days a week and finally hit 50 this past week. Woo! But, I’m out of shape and have a lot of work to do to start logging those PRs.

My #runnerselfie after my 50th mile for the week!

Mon: 8 easy on the Y treadmill (8:15ish)

Tue: Crazy busy day. Only had time for a quick 5. 7:50 pace? I forget!

Wed: Off for baby’s gym and swim class.

Thu: 8 with 4 mile tempo averaging 7:01. I have barely done any workouts in weeks and I was really nervous. I started slow; my first mile was 7:15. But by the end I was running 6:40s and feeling ok and I made it through 4 continuous tempo miles. Gotta start somewhere!

Fri: 8 easy on the Y treadmill (8:15ish)

Sat: 12.75ish on sloppy roads.

Sun: 8.25ish running behind the salt truck!

Total: 5o!

Salty Running boss and mother of 3 little ones with PRs of 3:10:15 (26.2), 1:25:59 (13.1) and 18:15 (5k). I love to write about running culture, mental training, and fitting in a serious running habit with the rest of a busy life.
