Salty’s Training Log – 12.21.14

Pinch me! Third week of 70 miles in the last 5 weeks and I’m still feeling good. Although, I have to admit it is starting to catch up with me. I have to work hard to keep my left foot from tightening up and my it bands are frequently threatening to strike. I roll my foot out on a tennis ball every other day or so and that definitely helps it and then I torture myself on the foam roller for the it bands, making sure to get my butt, hammies and adductors too. When it comes to running injuries, I have found that it is rarely the thing that hurts that is causing the problem – it’s a chain reaction, so make sure to work on neighboring muscles to the one that hurts along with the opposing muscle (e.g. adductor, inner thigh to it band, outer thigh).ย I’m sure it hasn’t helped that sleep has been an issue. My son had the flu all week so napping couldn’t happen and holiday stress did a number on my sleep at night.

In other news, I am obsessed with sale running shoes and have stocked up with 4 super cheap pairs, including a pair of Hoka’s I snagged for < $50. They’re trail shoes, but still light. I like to have a pair of trail shoes on hand for sloppy conditions in the winter and then actual trails other times of the year. I tried them on and I can’t say I’m super wowed, but they will at least be adequate for those purposes. Anyone else have Hokas? Maybe you can explain the love to me!

This week will likely be lighter with the holidays. I don’t run on Christmas, unless my husband wants to run with me perhaps. It’s just to crazy to haveย to run. I feel like the family deserves a break from my running demands ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope all of you who celebrate have a great Christmas!!

Mon: 7 early and easy.

Tue: 7.5 early and easy.

Wed: a.m. 4 easy on the treadmill ~8:00; p.m. 9 with solo track workout on an indoor 20om track. 6 x 1200 with 90 seconds rest. Ran 4:27, 4:27, 4:28, 4:30, 4:29, 4:32. Really struggled in the middle of the last one – my hip hurt a little bit and of course my legs were tired! But I rallied the last lap to be close to my 4:30 goal.

Thu: a.m. 6 early and easy. p.m. 3.5 easy.

Fri: 10 with 8 tempo @ 6:45 on the Y treadmill. This was the worst night of sleep. Husband was off from work so had planned to get out before preschool drop-off time, but could not wake up in time.

Sat: 9 early and easy with Jasmine.

Sun: 15 @ 7:34 with my ladies. Beautiful scenery on a moderately challenging route. Enjoyed it, but was really tired by the end!

Total: 70!!!
