Salty’s Post-Partum Running Update – Week 6

My little one is 6 weeks old as of yesterday. I’m starting to see glimpses of a schedule. She’s been going down to sleep each night a little earlier. It started at 11:30 and now she’s down to 9:30 and she sleeps for 3-4 solid hours in her bassinet and I can count on it. Even better, she takes a nap at the same time my big kids do every day and she takes it in the little travel swing that sits next to the treadmill. Not only does this allow me to get a run in, but I have the peace of mind knowing she’s a-ok because I she’s right there with me. It’s great!

What’s not so great is that I’ve been struggling with some aches and pains. While I am surely fitter than I have ever been post-birth, I am still weak, especially in the core. I have been much better about doing my core exercises since my problems developed. The other thing, which was greatly contributing to my problems was my shoes. My shoes were all pretty beat so I went to get new ones a couple of weeks ago. When I was pregnant I liked the neutral shoes a salesperson at my fave running store suggested I try – the Nike Pegasus. So, I ran in to the store and got a new pair of those. For some reason, since I delivered the baby, those shoes started to bug me. After wearing them my arch hurt and then the next run, my butt hurt again. OH NO!

So, I went back to the store to pick up a pair of my current fave stability shoes, the Nike LunarGlide. However, the sales person insisted I was a neutral shoe and a whole size up from what I used to be! I had all three kids with me at the store (yes, I’m nuts!) so I didn’t have time to really do my homework here, so I trusted him and bought the giant size 10 neutral boats he recommended. All the way home I regretted it. Sure enough, I tried them out on the treadmill and they hurt. So I went back yesterday and my friend and teammate was working and he helped me find what I like: a snug fitting stability shoe. Back to the size 9’s! I went with a pair of Nike Structures and a pair of Brooks Adrenaline. I wore the Nike’s today and they were so much better! First world crisis averted!

The moral of the story is to be extra careful about wearing the right shoes when running soon after delivering a baby and to always trust yourself over the salesperson!

Now for the body stuff. Yeah, not exciting. Still holding steady at 147, at least I was on Tuesday when I weighed myself. I know I probably won’t start dropping the weight until about 12 weeks at the earliest, but it still stinks to have 20 lbs packed mostly on my stomach. That’s with nursing a ton, running and eating healthfully. ย It’s just the way it is. So, in the meantime I am going to have to post the same photos of myself over and over. It’s frustrating, but I have hope that it’s a) for a good reason and b) not permanent.

Only difference from 2 weeks ago is the color of my bra.

Mon: 6 on the tm averaging 9:03

Tue: 6 on the tm averaging 8:53

Wed: off

Thu: off

Fri: 5 on the tm averaging 8:55

Sat: 6 hilly miles outside with Pepper! averaging 9:01

Sun: 8.5 with Ginger! no watch

Total: 31.5

  2. Nice! Glad to hear things are falling into a good routine. Have you ever tried the Mizuno Alchemys? They are awesome because they have a lot of stability but are super lightweight. I HATE the current model (pleaseopleaseoplease come out with the next ones) but otherwise they are my go-to show. I also just purchased the Brooks Pure Cadence. I am hoping its a winner.

  3. You are doing so awesome Salty!!! Seriously!! I can’t say I logged even close to 31 miles 6 weeks after the birth of any of my kids. My hardest comeback was after the birth of my twins. Basically because two babies really stretched my muscles out. I have accepted now that my stomach will never be 100% flat again. It took me well over a year to get the strength back in my core after their birth. It took me a long time too to drop those last annoying pounds that just want to hang on. I was nursing two babies and it was still hard. So, just know that you are doing the best that you can and that it takes time, unfortunately. I know the anxiousness that you face. I wanted to get right back into running and right back into my smaller sized clothes. I have accepted my stretch marks and “extra” skin pooch on my stomach as a reminder of how blessed I was and I am now to have two beautiful boys:).
