Readers Roundtable: What Do You Love Most About Fall Running?

Y’all, I just love fall.

The crunch of the leaves, the faint sounds of high school football I can hear from my back porch, the cider and pumpkin of it all. I know these things are all so clichรฉ, and yet, I simply do not care: fall is far and away my favorite season. Even though the calendar says today is the first day of fall, “far and away” seems to be exactly where fall is this year!

Fall is here!Fall brings out the best things, truly. I bring my hoodies to the front of the closet, bust out the boots and dip my apple slices into caramel while snuggled up on my couch with a fleece blanket and a DVR full of new TV premieres.

That translates to running, too. Just to name a few of my faves: the long-sleeves-and-shorts combo, crisp morning air, and the way the leaves put on a show for us.

I know I’m not alone in my wish for cooler temps to hurry and get here, like, now. Since fall seems to be making a delayed appearance in my neck of the woods and in many others, I thought maybe some of you would like to join me in talking about your love of autumn. Who knows? Maybe, like with Tinkerbell and clapping, if we believe hard enough, it will arrive.

  1. I love the light of the fall sky. The special crisp blue that seems to appear only this time of year. Also fall is when we get tremendous early morning fog. I wear lights and a safety vest but I love the sort of semi-spooky other-worldly feel of it. Last year, I was injured and missed most of the fall season so I am savoring it this year.

What I do not love about fall? It seems to be Dead Snake Season. Lost count on yesterday’s 18 miler, but it was a LOT of dead snakes!

  2. Fall is my favorite season! I love the cooler temperatures and being able to breathe (less humidity and allergies). I love running through the dark and checking out all of the holiday decorations, especially for Halloween. I love the fall racing season because itโ€™s the time of year where I typically score all of my PRs. The only thing I could truly do without would be all of the spiders and cobwebs.

  3. I love the contrast between the blue sky and the red and yellow leaves. The colors become so diverse! I also love seeing all the other runners, walkers, and bikers out on the trails just enjoying the nice weather. I don’t like walnut season lol! I’ve had to hurtle several already.

  4. I love when it cools down and you suddenly find you can run a lot faster at the same effort level! Also, foggy drizzly days where you can sit on the sofa with a cup of tea and the cat. So satisfying.
