Reader Roundtable: What is Your Oldest Race SWAG?

Can you believe this is still in my closet after nearly 15 years???
Can you believe this is still in my closet after nearly 15 years???

We’ve introduced a new feature on Salty Running called “Reader’s Roundtable,’ and asked all of you to share with us your post-run shower habits and “chicking” stories.  This week, we want to know what ancient race t-shirts, hats and other swag is lurking in the back of your closet!

Recently, I was going through my running shirts when I came across a faded and oversized race tee 2005, then another one from 2003!  Eventually I found that my oldest swag is from 2000!  It’s a white cotton, oversized, unisex faded T-shirt that even has holes under the armpits.

Is it hoarding? Is it sentimental?  Why do we keep these things?

So it’s your turn, ladies (and gents)!  What’s the oldest race swag that you have, and what are its most atrocious features?  Do you wear it?  Would you ever part with it?

Native Ohioan now living in Boulder, Colorado. I love to run, tri, train, eat good chocolate, drink good rum, and laugh (a lot). I am a CPA by trade and work for Newton Running.

    1. Nice! Do you think you will hold onto it since that was your first race? I still have my Cleveland Marathon T-Shirt from 2002–the first time I qualified for Boston. I’m keeping it for sentimental reasons.

  1. My oldest race swag is only from 2009 – my second race. It’s a cotton t-shirt – purple, with a good graphic – and I always pack it as my sleeping shirt when I travel to races. Somehow, like Vanilla’s shirt – it has also developed holes in the armpits. (Seriously? It’s not like it’s seen THAT much action…)

  2. I have shirts dating back to when I first started running in 1994. I keep saying that someday I’ll turn them into a quilt, but for now they are in my basement.

    1. If you do end up making a quilt, please share a picture with us. Mint has made a quilt (or quilts) out of her t-shirts. That’s a great idea and a nice way to recycle!

  3. Sorry for the unrelated comment but I’m really missing the weekly training logs. Have they stopped over the past couple of weeks or am I missing them somehow? If I click on training logs in the menu, it tells me there are no posts that match the selection criteria.

      1. Hi, it must be something to do with the mobile version as I switched to desktop and can see them there. Thank goodness, I was having withdrawal symptoms, I love reading the training logs!

  4. I try to downsize on (what I’d like to think is) a regular basis. The shirt that has avoided the donation pile since 2009 is from my first ever triathlon.

  5. Like Honey, I also downsize regularly but I still have my oldest race swag… a tshirt from a high school XC race in 2004. It’s actually not in particularly bad shape. I keep hanging onto it because the colors are AWESOME (forest green shirt with metallic gold printing! they don’t make ’em like that anymore, LOL… or if they do I can’t find them!!)

  6. my oldest I wear is one my father earned in the 70’s or early 80’s, it is so darn comfy. My oldest shirt still in rotation from a cross country invitational in ’97.
