Well, my training week came to an abrupt halt on Saturday morning when, as I prepared to make coffee, I managed to spill the boiling water down my right thigh and knee. After initial icing and cold water (and OMG intense pain), I called the advice nurse who advised me to go into the ER because of the size of my burn. Upon being treated for 2nd degree burns, I asked the doctor, “So, can I run 18 miles tomorrow?” He was not amused. In fact, I don’t think he had his morning coffee either. Looking at my wound two days later, I’m laughing that I even thought to ask if I could run. While it no longer hurts, I have to constantly apply antibiotics to my raw and blistering skin and wrap it in bandages. Pretty sure running isn’t going to happen. He did say it would take about a week to heal and there wouldn’t be any scarring, but it’s looking to me like I’m going to have a pretty scar all summer long – horray.
The good news is that while I missed an 18 mile run, I am beginning my taper and I have two weeks to heal for my 50K. I already decided my time goals were thrown out the window, so this just reinforces my goal to just finish. I would like to finish my 50K without an open flesh wound. Sounds about good.
