Pimento’s Training Log 12.19.15

Scout has TAD (Treadmill Affective Disorder) because I can’t run outside he isn’t running; he just hangs out on my sweaty running clothes.

Busy week including holiday gatherings, party hosting, school Christmas concert, volunteering, piano recitals, and two girls’ nights out… Highest mileage week, and single longest run, since before NYC, with 31 miles out of 52 on the dread-mill. Great workouts kept me sane and are making me feel faster!

Sunday: Rest day before a long week of way too much stuff… Ended the night at our friends’ Hanukkah dinner. Ate my own weight in latkes, my kale/quinoa/butternut squash salad, and macaroons. Yummy.

Monday: 9 miles, (7:45 avg. pace) Treadmill progression and incline workout: (8:45@ 0%incline, 8:30 @0%, 8:15 @1%, 8:00 @2%, 7:45 @ 0%, 7:30 @1%, 7:15 @ 2%, 7:00 @ 0%, 6:45 @ 1%) Ahh, so after all my griping about treadmills last week, and saying I could never run more than eight miles on mine, today I ran nine… How? A very specific progression workout mixed with prescribed incline changes. Having to think that hard made the time go by, and I finished very sweaty and on a runner-high. Alas, Showering lost to Running, and I went to my Christmas Book Club dinner in my peacock leggings with the core of my messy bun still wet from my run… I dashed on some deodorant, mascara and lipgloss so I’m sure I was fine…

Tuesday: 6 miles OUTSIDE!!! (8:09 pace) An early Christmas miracle allowed me to run outside today, pushing the stroller and holding the dog’s leash of course. Alora promptly fell asleep and Scout ran happily the whole way. He is now quite well-trained; he stays on my right and totally ignores dogs barking from behind fences. Actually, he doesn’t totally ignore them: he just goes faster, kind of like when I pass another runner and respond by sucking in, switching to a forefoot-strike, and speeding up.

Do you see the face too, or am I going nuts from running inside too much?

Wednesday: 7 miles Treadmill workout: 3-mile warm up, 2 miles of 1/4-mile @ 6:30, 1/4-mile @7:50 back and forth, cool down mile, then last mile with 4 strides. The workouts get me through the miles on the dreadmill, although today I noticed the ‘mill is constantly sticking its tongue out at me… Showering lost to running again, as well, and I hosted my husband’s work Christmas party at our house still glistening. A good time was had by all.

Thursday: 7 miles (8:27 pace) Treadmill, again… It was supposed to be an easy day, but I was so bored I ended up making it a hill day and increasing the incline every mile up to 4% before decreasing every mile back to 0%. The weather forecasters are using the term “atmospheric river” to describe the amount of precipitation we are getting from these storms.

Friday: 8 miles Treadmill, 4 miles @8:35, 3 miles @ 7:30, last mile with 4 strides. Today running in my garage again nearly put me over the edge, only the workout and two episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” got me through it… Barely.

Saturday 15 miles (7:48 pace) Met my friend, Lonn, at 6:30am to get a long run done outside(!) before a full day that includes my son’s piano recital and hosting a Christmas gathering with my in-laws. Did a three-mile pick up at toward the end of the run: 7:19, 7:10, 6:42. Went out on only a cup of coffee and I’m happy to know I can run well with no fuel/water; it’s been a long time since I’ve experimented with that because my runs are usually mid-day.

Total weekly mileage: 52 miles

I'm an elementary P.E. teacher with a long-term, ongoing marathon addiction. The next big goal? Keeping up my BQ streak while aiming for a 3:10! I write about the not-so-glamorous side of running and fitting in serious training with a family while staying sane(ish).
