Pesto’s Training Log 8.13.16

A great week in so many ways. I am slowly beginning to feel like I am regaining some fitness – which I will count as a win with several days reaching the very high nineties. Much more exciting than my return to training, my Mum is currently visiting from New Zealand so we have been hitting a number of local tourist destinations in the DC/VA area. I really should have kept better track of all our walking adventures because every night my feet have been aching!

Monday – (am) 60mins on W&OD trail. The name of this trail will mean absolutely nothing to almost all of you – but I will have you know it provides ZERO shade and it was awful.
(pm) Body weight strength exercises
Touristing – Hike & picnic at Great Falls Park

Tuesday – (am) 60mins on the C&O canal. Learned my lesson from yesterday and meet up with a friend to run much earlier than I got moving yesterday.
Touristing – DC sightseeing and went to a Nationals game in the evening. In our attempt to make Mum’s visit as ‘American’ as possible we made her drink a Miller Lite … she was largely unimpressed and vows to stick to craft brews.

Wednesday – (am) Workout. 2 mi warm up. 3 x 1.5 mi (6:20 pace) w/ 800m jog between. 3.5 mi cool down.
(pm) Gym, weights.
Touristing – Shopping & lunch in Georgetown. Despite my best attempts to rally, I was pretty pooped from the morning’s workout. Pro tip: If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend Thunder Burger. They have an awesome array of burgers and beers, which was a saving grace in pulling me out of my post workout slump.

Thursday – REST DAY. Laid around and watched the Olympics for the large majority of the day. We play Bocce at a local winery on Thursday evenings with friends – where we consistently drink the most wine and somehow remain undefeated.

Friday – (am) 60mins. Another hot and swampy run which left me feeling like I didn’t even know how to run. I’m going to cite heat/dehydration as the cause … not too much wine the previous night?!
(pm) Easy 25min shake out.
Touristing – I had to work today (blasphemy!) but Mr Pesto took Mum out to eat and they hung out at the pool.

Saturday – (am) Workout. 5 mi easy (8min/mi)/5miles ‘non easy’ (little under 7min/mi)/2 mi cool down.
Body weight strength.
Touristing – Matt’s parents arrived in town last night to spend time with my Mum and we took them to the National Zoo. We walked around in 95+ degrees for the best part of 3hrs but were all ready for home, and ice cream, by the end.

Sunday – (am) 45min easy recovery.
Touristing – Day trip to Annapolis Harbor. Topped off with all you can eat snow crabs for dinner – perfect end to a wonderful week!

One more week of vacation and then back to reality – if anyone has idea as to how I can keep this schedule up please let me know!

I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience while sipping on wine & coffee in Northern Virginia. Together with my husband and Rhodesian Ridgeback, Gracie we battle to keep the Tupperware cupboard organized for more than two days at time. I recently ran my first marathon (2:51) and am excited for what is to come. I like to ramble about running post injury, finding a work-life balance and running quickly.

  1. I’m so glad your mom is visiting and that you’re taking her on these adventures! I also love how Mr. Pesto entertains your mom. You two are goals AF. Also happy to hear that you can feel your fitness coming back!
