Olive’s Training Log-9.25.16

I finished out week 8 of Hanson’s advanced half marathon training plan, and I’m excited to move on to the strength phase this week. I really like the structure of the program-1 week has longer long runs and easy runs, and the next week cuts back. This allows me to push through those longer mileage weeks, knowing that I’ll get a break! This week was a higher mileage week, though not as high as it will get in the coming weeks.

Monday: 7 miles easy, 7:47 pace. Later I lifted some weights.

Tuesday: Treadmill speed day! 2 mile warmup, 12×400 at 5K pace (6:30) with 200 recovery, 1 mile cooldown. This was not particularly fun on the treadmill. I’m weirdly excited for the upcoming longer speed sessions.

Wednesday: 6 miles easy, 7:58 pace.

Thursday: Tempo Thursday. 2 mile warmup, 5 miles at goal half marathon pace (7:08ish), 1 mile cooldown. This went ok, but I was tired by the last mile. I tried not to think about having to do one more mile next week. Later I taught 2 strength training classes.

Friday: 5 miles easy, 8:12 pace. I was so tired during this run, I felt like I was falling asleep. Later I taught a strength training class and got a very painful massage which helped get the knots out of my hamstrings and calves.

Saturday: I had planned on doing my long run today, but woke up sore from my massage and decided to put it off another day.

Sunday: 12 miles on the treadmill, which cut off and reset itself for no reason so I’m not sure on the time. The treadmill is not my preferred long run apparatus, but my husband was stuck out of town, so I did what I had to do. This was not fun, but I finally got to watch This Is Us (which is great!) and the Grey’s Anatomy season premiere (which was meh). Later I taught a spin class.

Total: 45 miles

    1. oops – got cut off. …so was curious about how the half plan differed.

I am just about wrapping up the strength portion which I much preferred to speed.

  1. 400s on the mill are tough, but I love it for the longer speed workouts! I have to get tenderized, I mean, massaged this week too. Wish we lived closer– our training paces are pretty damn spot on!

  2. Agreed — 400s are about as short as you can manage. I do like the treadmill for longer speedwork on occasion because it helps fine-tune pacing. I feel like if I mix treadmill and outside for speed, I get a nice mix of learning pacing and testing it out IRL, haha.

It’s hard to schedule massages into training! I’ve been doing Tuesday afternoons, which means I have to do speedwork that morning but then I get the massage after speed and Wednesday is just easy mileage.

  3. I agree that short speed on the treadmill isn’t really fun- It’s logistically a little trickier too because letting the belt get to speed etc.

Re: This is us premier was awesome, but totally had me sobbing.

Re: Grey’s, yes a salty I can talk to about this! I didn’t think the premier was as big as other seasons, I’m curious to see how it all plays out though. I seriously hope they actually address Jo’s situation and it comes out…that would make for a great storyline this season. Also, I get more annoyed with Maggie as the shoe goes on…am I alone in this?
