Mint’s Training Log – 6.22.14

The goal.
The goal.

Week 3 of Chicago Marathon Training is in the books.

The temps and humidity have been rising, but I continue to be super excited about training and my big, audacious goals!

Monday is a rest day, but I did my arm weights.  I haven’t been able to consistently do them for a year due to my bike crash.  But I’ve done it 2x a week the last 3-4 weeks and am pain free.  Woot!  So I’m bumping up to 3x a week to help tone up these arms a bit.

Tuesday I had 75 minutes on tap with 4 strides / 8.5 miles / 8:51 pace.

Wednesday I ran 45 minutes / 5.1 / 8:55 pace.  I finished just before severe thunderstorms and tornadoes moved in!  We ended up spending an hour in the basement after I finished and ended up with one of our maple trees split in half!  Crazy weather.

Thursday I was scheduled for an hour with a 4 mile tempo run.  Unfortunately when I got up at 5:30, it was raining and the radar indicated big storms were going to stroll through.  Rather than getting caught in that, I decided to wait until the evening.  Of course, storms never rolled in (grrrrr).  But then I was asked to pace one of the boys I am coaching the half for in a 9 mile race Friday morning, so I decided I’d switch things up and call Thursday a rest day.  At least I did my arm weights and ab work.

Friday I ran 9 miles in the rain with one of the 13 year olds I am coaching while my son rode his bike.  We started out super easy, but I pushed the pace on the last 2 miles (8:38; 8:13 paces).  It was humid and raining, but he rocked it.  9 miles / 9:02 pace.  I also had lunch with my coach to talk about this season.  We’re going to go big and hopefully I’ll log a couple of 70 mile weeks.  200, baby!

Saturday I decided to make up my tempo run.  It wasn’t too warm (low 70s) but it was wicked humid.  I did a 20 minute warm up, then 4 @ tempo (7:28, 7:30, 7:29, 7:31); then cool down with 4 strides.  I was a puddle and a half when I finished and had the beginnings of a nice headache. Reminder: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  It’s funny too because this is relatively close to my goal marathon pace – I’ve got a lot of work to do!

Sunday I had a whole crew to run with.  My husband, my son, his friend and I all took off at 8:00 am for a 9 mile run.  It was warm, humid and sunny, so we took it super easy.  After the boys finished their scheduled 9, my husband and I went one more to round up to 10.  We then had a nice waffle breakfast for recovery.  93 minutes / 10 miles / 9:22 pace.  Arm weights.

Total: 5 hours, 56 minutes / 40.1 miles
