After a couple of down weeks, I finally feel like I have a training log with mentioning. Last week was really light with my mini vacation, so this week I was determined to get back on track for my Wisconsin Marathon training. For the most part, I was able to stick to my schedule, but due to a head/chest cold, I did have to make some modifications (darn sickness from traveling!).
Monday is my rest day. It was a long, busy day as we were traveling home from Tucson, Arizona. Instead of spending our last hours of vacation relaxing, we had to battle with the airlines after they mysteriously removed both of our kids from the flights home!
Tuesday I was up early to put in my speed work on the treadmill. Even though Monday was a very long, exhausting day, my legs felt pretty fresh after a few days off. I did a one mile warm up (8:57 pace); then 6 x. 5 miles @ 6:58 pace with .25 mile recoveries; 13 minute cool down with 4 striders. 55 minutes / 7 miles / 7:53 average pace.
The exciting news of the day was after work, we went and picked up our newest family member – 8 week old Stella!
Wednesday I was scheduled for 40 minutes easy. I felt good, however, and stretched it out to 45 minutes. 5.15 miles / 8:47 pace.
Thursday I was scheduled for 70 minutes with 6 miles at tempo pace. Unfortunately, I woke up with a wicked head and chest cold. So I did not run in the morning and headed out with my son to his school field trip. After the field trip, I had to go into the office and get some work done. Since I did not get home until almost 8 pm, I decided to get some rest and call this a sick day.
Friday I made myself get on the treadmill even though I still wasn’t feeling great. I completed my warmup and then started my tempo run. Unfortunately due to my cold, it was really hard and I couldn’t breathe. So I mixed it up a bit and did tempo intervals instead of 6 miles straight. It went like this: 2 mile warm up (8:57); 1 mile @ tempo; 20 minutes+ easy; 10 minutes tempo; last 15 minutes with short intervals (90 secs to 3 minutes @ tempo). Ended up with 75 minutes (about 26 of them at tempo pace); 9 miles / 8:26 average pace (tempo was between 7:30 and 7:41).
Saturday I was scheduled for 30 minutes easy, but I needed to make up for the 40 minutes I missed by skipping Thursday’s workout and moving things around. The beautiful part about this run was that I got to run outside. Glorious outside! It was cold and windy, but the sun was shining and the roads were clear, so I had a nice easy run. 70 minutes / 8 miles / 8:50 average pace.
Sunday was my long run day. You know those long runs where everything falls into place and you feel awesome? Yeah, this was not one of them. I still have a wicked cold and well, it was ridiculously cold. The sun was shining, but with the strong winds, it was freezing (Real temp around 15 degrees; Real Feel 1 degree = brrrr). My water bottles were covered in ice and my nuun water was more like a slushy than a water. I kept thinking maybe I’d go home and finish up on the treadmill, but I knew if I went home, I’d be done. Motivation would definitely leave the building. So I fought through and got it done. 2 hours 40 minutes / 17.75 miles / 8:59 pace. Normally I would have rounded it up and made it 18, but I was truly done at this point folks.
Total: 6 hours; 46 minutes – 47 miles
Frigid cold weather is expected to settle in tonight and stay for the week, so I am gearing up for another week on the treadmill….
